I am thinking of putting a reconditioned 2.4 Diesel (2L) motor with 6 months warranty/10000 kms in my 1982 LN46 Hilux Diesel 4x4. It has the original L motor in it now (2.2L).
1) Am I going to notice any difference
2) What are the good and bad points about a 2L motor
3) How many KM's can I expect to get out of a reconditoned 2L motor
4) What is a good price to pay for a 2L motor
5) Is it true that a 2L can bolt straight into an 1982 LN46 Hilux

[3] depends on your definition of reconditioned and the quality of the parts used

The 2L had a 5 spd gearbox and 4.556 ratio diffs 3240 rpm @110kmh
So it yould be highly recomended you replace the 4 spd with a 5 spd gearbox and the 4.875 diffs with 4.556 diffs unless you are running larger tyres this is for fuel economy

work it out for yourself 3240 rpm at 110 kmh with a 5spd gearbox or revving the ass at about 4000 rpm out of the diesel at 110kmh

That would seem the logical solution to me too.
If the 2L is the right price the go for it, if your just buying a 2L cos you need an engine then look at 3L's.
2L you'll notice the difference.

Frank I was recently shoppin around for a replacement 3L for my hilux and the average price i found from any wreckers or rebuilders was around the $3000 mark
I have heard of cheaper ones but you have to find a private seller
I think they will bolt straight in but i am totally unsure on the manifolds intake and exhaust as well as all the other bolt on such as alternator a/c compressor brackets
I am sure that you would need to do something with the injector pump though wheather you could get enough out of the old one or need to replace it I don't Know
you would possibly be better off gettin a full front cut and changin the lot over??

If you do thus ill swap you my 4.5s for ur 4.8s

Frank lux kid in melbnourne has a 3L and 5 speed gearbox for sale for 1500 only problem is its pick up I think!! You could probably get it frieghted might want to get someone to check it out for ya, but to me thats sounds like a really good price for a motor and gearbox.

if you fit a later model 5 speed you will need a custom crossmember, new rear drive shaft and a new front drive shaft.
I have a early model 4 speed which has been modified with the fitiment of a 5th gear. This gearbox is for sale and is the gearbox suited to a L series diesel. I am asking $500 PM if you are interested.

The advantage with the late model 5 speed is fitting longer front drive shaft and improve front end articulation with out stressing or breaking unis
