Difference between pre 93 and post 93 80s diffs
Can anyone tell me the differences? I have an 80s front diff/axle and im chasing parts for it im told they changed after the end of 92 and im unsure what year model my diff came out of. I would also like to fit hilux free wheeling hubs in place of the caps (it came off a full time gxl thats all i know) i am also told that the cv length is different on the post 93 models and it wont work. Ive searched but cant seem to find any detailed info on this, any help appreciated.

Toyota did an upgrade with the new twincam petrols, they made the splines of the constants longer because they were flogging out on early diffs, so
the c/v of a 8\92 and onwards constant is longer as is the drive plate, the early dx c/v is thesame as early constants and for that matter, all dx's till 98 had the shorter c/v...only the later constant got longer ones...So whats different early to late diffs??? the brackets for the front arms are welded on different early to later, because later cruisers are lower than early ones by 30mm.
later brakes are larger, but that is bolt on/off, the swivels are thesame.
c/v's are bolt on and off with drive plates...you can run short c/v with free wheel hub or long one with an extra circlip as a spacer....no dramas.

do you have any measurements that i could go out and measure on the parts i have to identify it as pre or post 93? is the spline just longer on the cv's or is the whole cv longer? i compared the cv length to a hilux one and they are identical. What is the go with the rotors? There are pre and post 93 rotors available at the shops.
Im fairly certain its pre 93 though going by these descriptions.

yeh just bought some myself as the parts are listed they say pre 5/94 they were shorter and post 5/94 to 98 they were longer. mines a 8/94 model and i got the longer ones and they are the right ones .part number for the longer ones is 86.tl333 .measurement of the later one is 250 mm overall length of the cv joint itself from end to end. apparently the earlier one is about 10 mm shorter but its the spline that is longer my spline is about 38mm longhope this helps
The cutoff date is when the 1fzfe came out in 9/92....with the intro of this motor came bigger discs, lower ride height, 16 inch wheels, longer splines in constants only.....ebay sellers are not up on their facts....you can use a short c/v with a short drive plate....it all fits....short c/v works best with fwh's but spacer can be used with long c/v. I did this in my 94 model.muddy80s wrote:yeh just bought some myself as the parts are listed they say pre 5/94 they were shorter and post 5/94 to 98 they were longer. mines a 8/94 model and i got the longer ones and they are the right ones .part number for the longer ones is 86.tl333 .measurement of the later one is 250 mm overall length of the cv joint itself from end to end. apparently the earlier one is about 10 mm shorter but its the spline that is longer my spline is about 38mm longhope this helps
