The 3 speed will most commonly be a T150

http://www.novakconversions.com/ check out their knowledge base on transmissions for more info

not a bad box if you can live with a 3 speed but a good swap is a T18a or the sm boxes

A 79 is a narrow track model at 50.5" wheel mount to wheel mount 83 onwards had wide tracks at 54.5" wheel to wheel

all the major lockers are available and a good range of LSD's, you can get most R&P ratios from 2.x to 4.56 plus you can also get transfer case gears.

parts you have about 4 major suppliers plus wooders who can source almost anything you will need from the US a lot of the time there is local alternatives that can also be used

look out for rust around the vent on the top cowl, under the dash behind the windscreen hinges

look for crack in the chassis near the steering box and spring hangers

this should get you started but one last bit of advice from someone who has owned a CJ7 for 8 years now if you are not the sort of person who like to fix their own stuff and do loads of research an be prepared to source parts from all over the place then maybe a early Jeep is not for you. If you do like these things then you will never look at another FJ40 in the same light :finger:
