Hi, I hope anyone can give me a clue wht;s wrong with my startor or if you have similar problem on your GQ ?
3 months ago had a startor problem. Brought to a elecrician in Dandenong "Auto Electrical Bits & Batteries" along Frankston Rd. Said it has faulty solenoid. But then he brench test, it seems engage ok. Anyway, it cost me $250 to replace solenoid and clean parts.
exactly 3 month after, some problem again. He claim water inside but i've never been offroad since it was fixed last time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boss "Dennis" said nothing he can do and i can't claim for warranty. Keep blaming my battery and connection.
Confirmed good battery (700Amp cranking) and connection. Flywheel ok.
Problem : When key turn to start, can hear the startor turning with high pitch noise. Exactly same problem twice include this time.
Could anyone give me advice ? Should I replace a brand new one(last resort) or bring this startor to another electrician ?

startor problem on GQ TD42
Well, before you replace it ... get handy.
My Mitsu starter did the same thing but in reverse. Would stay engaged in the ring gear of the flywheel and squeal like a mother farker until eventually it would shake itself back out.
Starter motors are ridiculously simple things. Get yourself some degreaser, a wire brush and an old toothbrush. Strip it down as far as it'll easily go and pump the bits full of degreaser, give it a good clean, regrease (with a light grease) any moving parts and re-assemble.
Viola, just like a bought one.
Prob with buying a newie is, as soon as you fill it with water/mud/clutch dust, it'll do the same thing again. If you learn to do this you'll be able to freshen it up once a year and it'll cost you jack.
The worst that will happen is you stuff it up and have to buy a new one anyway, you've only lost a couple of hours of you time.
Mine ran like this for 2 years with only 2 re-builds that took no more the a couple of beers on a Sat arvo.

Our local auto elec charges around the $100.00 for a full rebuild !!, I'd be looking for another auto elec real fast.
It also sounds like the sollinoid has died again ( the solinoid "engages "the starter to the flywheel & passes the full battery current to the starter). if the solinoid is faulty then it wont engage properly if at all, and/or the starter wont "spin" the motor over fast enough. I'd hit the wreckers and grab a spare and get yours rebuilt by a "professional" auto elec.
NB/ some starters will continue to remain "engaged " after the key has been released from the start position and will eventually disengage themselves ( usually after the motor has been reved slightly), 3 things cause this.....
1:poor or burnt contact points in the solinoid ( the contact points tend to spot weld themselves together)...replace solinoid.
2:the bendix drive ( the little gear that actually engages on the flywheel) runs up and down the centre shaft of the starter, sometimes this shaft becomes dirty,clogged, or rusty and thus slows the bendix drive from returning to its rest position.... clean shaft and lubricate
3:the starter is missaligned where it attaches to the motor or gearbox... check that the bolts arent slightly bent ( sometimes a rock, log, small furry animal can bend these bolts with a small impact !). If that isnt the case then loosen the bolts slightly and move the starter a bit and retighten the boltz. Chevs are really bad for this and holdens arent farbehind.
other than the above....I'm with RoldIT, saves bucks too, in your case BIG bucks !!!

4: The piston in the solenoid that "throws" the starter drive shaft out to the flywheel seizes. This is what was happening to mine but in reverse, mine jammed engaged were yours doesn't seem to engage to start off with. Mine were always full of a build up of clutch dust, quick clean and she's right as rain.
Regardless of your individual issues, it ain't gunna hurt to pull er out an take a look. If you really aren't that adventurous, then head to the repairer but as I said, these things are piss easy, give it a go.
