Hey guys,
Having a problem with my MK... SD33t.
iv noticed that when i put my indicators on, the car stalls!!!??? it will be ideling fine, then if i put the left or right indecator on, it drops in revs and eventually cuts out...
then this morning i tryed to start it, and no deal. she didnt start! i think my battery is flat. Now i sort of think it has something to do with lack of battery power? my altinater seems to be cover'd in dirt, is it possible that it isnt charging properly due to being dirty?
Or there is something up with my indicator assembly... shorting out or something?
Hmmmm...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

With the running you should be getting around 13.8volts from memory. If you are not getting more voltage then your battery output your alternator is shagged.
Maybe try cleaning it, mind you not sure the best method to do that other then spray with hose and let dry. I'm not sure wd40 in the alternator will do any good !!

Swerve is right, you need to do some measuring. Hook up a multimeter and see what the battery voltage is with the engine not running, then start it up and see what the voltage is then.
It should be sitting on 12V with the engine off, and jump to at least 13V when the engine is running. If not, give it a bit of a rev and see if anything happens to the voltage then - alternators often fail at low revs but still operate a little more at higher revs.
If you don't have a multimeter, it is really worth considering just buying one. Cheap digital multimeters at Supercheap (sometimes in the specials bin at Bunnings) are under $10 and handy to have in the tool kit.
Anyway, first do the measurements then you have something to test when you clean everything up. Otherwise you'll clean it and have trouble being sure whether you've actually fixed anything.

im doing mine now, coz it isnt charging as the brushes are stuck. depending on the make of alt fitted you might have trouble to get the brush and reg assy (if its a bosh just about everyone will stock parts, if there isn't any markings in the cast it will more than likly be an enzo alt so i have been told, and there a little harder to get parts for, covs should be able to tell you who to try).

- 1# Remove all oil and air lines to the brake pump, the oil supply line has to be removed from the side of the block.
2# Remove the altenator from the vehicle.
3# I removed the brake pump from the altenator, by removing the 3x screws that secure it (not sure if this is required, its just how i did it)
4# Remove the 4x long philips head screws that go around the altinator
5# Remove the 5x 8mm nuts from the back of the ALT and 1x 10mm nut.
6# Sepperate the alltinator and remove the brush and reg assy.

thanks for the help lads, firstly i will probs hose down the altinator to see if i can get most the mud off, let it dry and test volatages... i'll check water levels in the battery and put her on the charge overnight... if this doesnt help then i'll pull the altinator down and do a proper clean out.

but ..........
with regard to the indicators .........
MQ's & MK's have some years on them and I've found on several occasions that the indicators start to play up for no real reason....
The culprit is dust in the switching mechinisim, the only way is to take off the steering wheel and then the indicator cluster and clean it out using a sprayon contact cleaner then re-greasing the workings and then reassembling it all.
you'd be supprised as to how much shyte ends up in there !!!

Yesterday arvo, i pulled out the battery, whacked her on the charge and hosed out the altinator... This morning put it all back in, the truck started fine...
BUT even reving it, the volts remain around 12. so the altinator isnt giving a charge to the battery. and it still does the indicator thing...
Hmmm looks like i'll pull down the altnator this weekend and clean the indecators assy like V8patrol suggested.
On a better note, i get my 2" suspension lift today

I went through the same thing 2 weeks ago on my sd33t. I was hoping like hell that it wasn't the alternator (Hitachi, hard to get bits for) - it had only been rebuilt 18 months before and hadn't been abused, so couldn't see why it would be the problem. After a bit of testing the problem was the external regulator. I replaced it with an Ingram electronic one and now have plenty of output.
Not saying that's your problem, but it's real easy to test with a multimeter and a piece of wire, and might save you rebuilding a working alternator...

Well after a week of dicking around with my mk electrical assembly. iv ditched the old altinator (it was fuct) and picked one up from the wrekers. putting her in today. hopefuly all is well after this... i pulled apart the old altinator and cleaned and re-built, but still nothing.
got a new set of headlight bulbs aswell, person who had the truck before me used high out-put globes which fuct all my relays. so after a week and a few hundred bucks i think im back to where i started
