Turboing a 4.2 GQ Q.

Post by sudso »

Mates got a 91 4.2 GQ and wants to turbo it.
We didnt find the info we wanted in a search so asking the usual questions here.

Does the non turbo 4.2 need any mods or beefing up for a turbo?
If so what needs to be done?

What is the best Nissan turbo to fit to this engine and what extra bits are needed or would they all come with the turbo if buying 2nd hand

Thanks, Sudso

TD42 needs no internal mods for Fitting Turbo. My Safari Turbo needed oil supply (tapped into spare point on main oil gallery) and a hole punched into the side of the sump for oil drain from Turbo. Coolant is tapped off Thermostat housing and drains back to block via a fitting screwed into the engine block drain point. 10PSI boost and 3in exhaust with no muffler--flys with 35 BFG's and 4.6 diff ratios. I added Oil Temp,Boost and EGT gauges

I'm assuming TD42 here ...

In terms of 2nd hand Turbos - you should have one that comes as part of a kit - sold as a kit.

You will need:
- Suitable turbocharger
- Exhaust Manifold
- Oil & Coolant Hoses
- Oil "T" fitting for oil feed
- Barb fitting for sump
- Coolant "T" fitting
- Coolant return fitting
- Heat Shields
- Dump Pipe (from turbo back)
- X-over pipe & all clamps and silicone hose

Recommended:
- Boost Gauge

Services Required:
- Pump tune - preferably on the bench

Optional Services:
- Injector replacement / pressure increase

There are many great kits out there that are all very similar in performance / price - although most manufacturers will try and tell you why theirs is the best (who doesn't? :) ) ... personally I chose an AXT as it was water/oil cooled + came very complete with all of the appropriate fittings and was well matched / engineered to the engine - i.e. custom housings and wheels, heat shields included, mandrel 2.5" dump pipe included, all stainless braided hoses etc. whereas others seemed to lack one or more of these features.

TB42 / Petrols are a different animal altogether, and need some additional hardware to adjust the fuel load.
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...
