New Brakes for the 80. Just need to bleed them

Post by bruiser »

Had the 80 series brakes rebuilt and added the 100 series pads to the front. :D Cant wait to see how well they work. :D
All that's left to do is bleed them.

Are there any tricks to this?

You need time, an empty stubbie (to collect old fluid), some 4mm (or 5mm) clear flexible tube from Bunnings, 10mm ring spanner a good few hours and an assistant to pump the brake pedal........just like any normal system. 80series has Rear drivers, rear passenger, front driver, front pass and then rear load valve (close to rear pass wheel). If you are changing the fluid, get 2l of DOT4, I managed to change mine using just 1.5l.......but it was close so glad i had the spare.

You could try the one man bleed or pressure kits you can get, but of all the systems I have bled in my time, you cant beat the simple method.......push, close nipple, release, open and repeat

Have fun, and let us know what you think of the new 100pads.......something I have looked at, but must be looking at the wrong type of pads

Paid $110 per rear and $130 per front plust $20 per piston
All up was about $700.

Bled the brakes last night. only used 1 litre of fluid but I think there is still a bit of air in the lines as the pedal is a little spongy. Will re bleed them on the weekend again.
I used dot 3 as that is what is recomended in the manual and the only type that Toyota sell.

What is the difference between dot 3 and dot 4

They are definetly working heaps better and I can now brake heavily without the wheel pulling to one side. :D

I think the difference between DOT 3 and 4 is purely the temp at which the fluid boils, I am sure someone will say if i am wrong. I had a look for DOT 3 and could only find DOT 4 so used that (i never tried Toyota tho!). My old fluid was very discoloured hence using a bit more fluid. Get all the air out (and I wouldnt drive it until you have, if anything were to happen god forbid!) and it should all be sweet!
