88 GQ petrol/gas 4.2 leter, starting (very gradually) to get louder in the bottom end, slower in the power end and loosing water.......... so, my question is what other engines are worth fitting, V6 V8 etc??? i want to run the motor on gas alone (or dual fuel if thats a better option ??)
list some engines and why/how youd fit em? and no cheezy NOS is a no go
6.5L Chev V8 TUrbo Diesel, because it sounds like a truck and would be extremly nice to own one, nice power, and tourque and the plus is its a diesel.
It all comes down to the $$$$$$$$ side of things, its not what we can recomend, its what you can afford, we can tell you to spend 15Gzzzz on something that has nice power and all, but how will you benefit,
you need to give us a budget figure, so then we can give you ideas that suit you.
Saw an injected 5000 GMH V8 with turbo 700, 5000km go for $3200 at auction. That would be a sweet coversion if someone makes an adapter for the T700 to Patrol case.

Heard of a bloke putting a VH45 engine (quad cam V8) out of a nissan infinity into a GQ Shorty. Uses the same gearboxs as the 300zx Turbo, so should fit to a gearbox and x-fer case out of a 3lt petrol or 2.8tdi patrol.
Was thinking of this idea my self, until I found out that the yucky noise coming out of my car was only the bearing in the a/c that was nackered.

You have only had it 2 mths...
Why do you wanna run on gas alone? Since you are now a big truckie, go with a diesel, and use the fuel card from work for free fuel....
Wats everyones thoughts on an RB30 Turbo engine from a Commodore.
There got 150kw standard on 7psi boost pressure and come onto boost at 2200rpm.What box options do you have putting 1 in a shorty other than the factory 3ltr box.MAV
Forget petrol commodore engines unless you want to fuel your car up every three days. Go the Chev Diesel 6.5. You won't regret it. Will cost you more than 5k though.
I picked up an injected 350 chev inc. computer, air con, power steering, wiring loom, etc + turbo 700 for $3500 for my GQ SWB.. It's not in yet so I can't comment on how it goes.. Transfer Adaptors/Engine mounts are available for these from Marks.
I also looked at the chev diesels but the prices were way to high at the time.. $10K for reco 6.2l engine alone, $23k all up for rebuilt t700/reco 6.2l diesel drive in/drive out install from Linquip in Brisbane.
That's why I opted for the 350 chev instead.. There were no diesels available at the right price at that time, and all those with experience fitting them were charging an arm and a leg.
I've also heard from others down south that they've been quoted $20K+ for the same conversion.
I do the conversions up here for Brunswick Diesels.
6.2 conversion is cheaper than 6.5.
You will have change from $20k unless you want a brand new crate engine.

Still a lot of coin when the car isnt worth that much...

We have a RB30 Turbo motor & gearbox in our SWB Mav, it produces approx 175kw at the wheels with an intercooler. This conversion will cost about $5K. We get up to 8.5klms per litre on the highway, approx 6.5kpl around town and approx 4kpl offroad. It's alot more economical than the TB42 ever was and produces a s**tload more power.
The only problem we have it that it is tuned for premuim, but we just make sure we have octane boost on board in case.
The bloke fitting the VH45 is me and we have adapted it to fit the standard 4.2l gearbox, not such a cheap conversion, it will set you back approx $10K.

Bottom end performance would be a bit weak. If you are after fuel economy you are in the wrong sport.
A mate has a 6.2L Chev Diesel for sale for $1800 to suit rebuild. You would have to ask V8 Diesel about the cost to rebuild though.
If ya want a 4x4 camry go ahead & buy a Patrol or Cruiser.
Rangie with 80s LC diffs, Isuzu 4bd1, Twin ARB lockers, 8000lb Hi mount warn, 315x75x16 Procomp XTerrains
thanks but i scored a 308 today (well, i get it soon but its mine) next Q is where/who do i ask about fitting? can i do this at home etc etc?? i got access to a welder etc and engine hoist etc but what else is needed parts wise to fit a 308 to a GQ?? gearbox diffs etc??
ok now that i been lookin at whats needed, this all comes down to cost, so what do people think, ive already got a 308 sitting here (bare motor)
so do i:
buy conversion kit, parts etc to fit the v8 then get it engineered etc (im also under 25 (insurance)
or
sell the 308 (it cost me nothing) and do alot of work to the TB42 i got in the car now??? what can i do to the motor to make it go? its gas/petrol but is running mainly gas
worked TB42 = (wat do you want to do & how much $$$$$$)
..............turbo
..............cam , efi , head work , balancing , exhaust ????
..............supercharging
everything is up to you & how much your willing to spend !!!!

Don't foget about the bugs on putting in a V8 and remember it's always going to cost more than what you first think. Usually double what you estimate and it might come close.
But once again it's up to you!
