Ironman 9500lbs winch

Does anyone know or bought one of these Ironman winches advertised for $799 in 4x4 monthly im interested to know if there any good as it says there 5.5hp with 3yr warranty

hey mate im pretty shore they are the same as the repco winches and all that .. just with the iron man name on it ... from wat i no some ppl swear by em as a genraly good winch but for not hardcore use..

Thanks i wont be doing tuff truck or anything just a weekend warrior only other thing i gotta find out is if it will fit in my genuine nissan winch bar of my 2002 guiii.

make sure u shop around have a look on ebay and other places as u could get a better price on one i reckon there on ebay for a cheap price ...

Mate I have a 12,000 pound one in my Nissan winch bar no trouble, you have to put them in upside down and undoing the 10 Allen keys rotate the gear box. 10 minute job and you get to inspect the innards.

The quality assurance is checked locally, remembering that winches like the Brawn were also Chinese ones. you could check http://www.4wheelingsa.org.au for their online magazine where they are checking various winches including the Ironman. That is the Autumn edition though I think from about page 45

I've got the repco version 9500lbs (same one as far as I know) it's done its job everytime

, but I paid $999 for mine, now there at $699 or something like that

.

Mate of mine just put one on his GQ and pulled a 45s across the work shop straight up. There just not that fast and noisy, not that that should matter.

Just fitted one to my GQ. havn't used it to recover anything as yet but sure seems ok for the price. I bought mine through Bursons and paid $605 Inc GST. This is with trade discount. Will report on it once I give it a work out.
This may be a while coming as it is only on a touring GQ which occasionaly gets used on tracks in Narby and gembrook.

I have seen these winches with a cut up fanta can as a spacer.

After seeing that I wouldnt touch one.

Nick, what are you talking about, spacer where? Sounds bodgy to me, it wouldn't have come from the factory like that.

Was pulled apart and a fanta can had been cut up and a flat section used as a washer, I will get more info of him we he gets back from Melbourne.

The winch was brand new and pulled apart to see what they were like in side.

This was a while ago and they have improved since but it still scares me.

yeah cant you just see the little chinese people sitting down cutting washers out of used fanta cans lol think its a case of chinese whispers i think you would of heard wrong any winching and lifting equpment has to pass australian testing before its sold.
i would say it was a sec hand one that some one had dodged up too sell more like anyway i suppose one day we will find the truth

I wouldn't be so sure about that, do you think all those chinese winches on ebay have been certified....I doubt it.

Thats right, Have the Ironmans been certified ? and if so how long ago ?

The winch I was talking about maybe before I dont know.

I still dont give a s&$t, As far as I am concerned anyone who is not going to pay for good recovery equipment cant expect me to pull you out if they fail.

Thats not a dig at Ironman owners, Warns can fail as well, But what happens when you winch to a spot the winch gives up in a spot you cant drive out of and now you expect someone else to risk there vechile to pull you out ?

Its the same as recovery points, do it properly.

I'm glad I'm in Victoria. Would hate to come across some one like you with that attitude in the bush if I was in a spot of trouble.

The amount of times we have spent hours recovering some one we didn't know because they did something stupid or weren't prepared.
It's all part of the game.

im 100% behind you ive done the same myself ... been out bush all day 4wding and come across people stuck stent half a day getting them out and enjoyed every minute of it and made many a friend and drunk many a beer too .
all i can say ive had warn winches all my time in 4wding and i can say they really are not as good as they make them out to be ive had 4 give up on me and one give out on a Dline pull in deep mud 8000lbs on a hilux .
anyway I dont care who you are if your stuck even if its you Nick what ever winch i was using i would help would be rude if you didnt.
just means your a stuck up city person with no morrals in ya new shinie 4wd

o and just in case and one thinks im picking on clean new 4wds i own a and yes its not that new but its a 1999 range rover pw pm heat seats ectecteect and it get mudie as hell inside and out and i stop for eveyone.

ok people ive just sent a email to ironman to see if they will come and defend their winches.
nope they do would be nice to have the factory tell us about the winch

As hard as it might be I may have to eat my words.

After some research over the weekend I have been told that the winch in question was an early Ironman one which was basically a glorified e-bay winch.

They have been updated to a rather large degree, I havent seen this personally but they are meant to be alot better than they were.

I was also told this new winch is a copy of a warn winch but a very old model warn. I will not pass judgment on this new winch cause I havent seen it.

I find it interesting that with a little bit of googling the "best available nothing less is good enough" warns

a) Leak or arne't even sealed and rust up internally
b) have a cable that is onyl rated to their line pull, so can snap it and do so regularly.

Yeah, 0% or less safety rating. There's world class engineering. I really am willing to trust something that I know is built to lunch itself in the worst way (recoil) at the worst time (max load car hanging on it).

I know the others aren't better, it's jsut worth noting they were't handed down with the 10 commanments as gods chosen winch, not even close.
