UHF Testing

The uhf in my car has poor tx/rx (poor distance) and my .5 watt handheld outperforms it.
Is there any way of testing the individual components ie aerial, cable, unit without buying a new one and plugging it in to test it with?

only way i think u can test emtis to take it to a pro and get em to signal test it

Most likely an aerial problem, some crack up inside, especially off road.
But any good uhf supplier can test that, too.

I had the same problem you describe, Telstat in Seaford fixed mine last week for $45. Turns out it was a short in the antenna lead. They ran a whole new antenna lead as the grommet in the firewall had come out and the lead was cut through by the firewall.
Weekdays - Prado GXL D4D with some stuff

You can do a quick test with a multimeter, Check and make suere there is no short on the coax and no short between the centre core and the vehicle chassis, If that tests all ok you can do a continuity test between the centre pin of the plug and the top of the antenna tomake sure you have a connection and the outer of the plug to the vehicle chassis to make sure you have the antenna base earthed.

But the best way to test is with a thru-line meter or SWR meter which will not only test the antenna but will also test the TX power of the radio.

The only way to test the receiver is to take it in to a communications place and get them to bench test it using an IFR.
