Toyota Rear Diff *Bang*

Post by vanzbrown »

Just after some advice...

Today leaving work, sounded like a bang from the rear diff on my 60series.... then clunking sounds like something had come loose...

Couldnt really drive it much faster than first, really banged around once in 2nd.

Even getting towed home it was really loud...

What is the problem with my diff? Wont have time find out for sure till the weekend, but maybe someone could hint to whats happened. Does it sound like $$. What tests could i do to eliminate other problems... Ie... take out tail shaft and listen to see if noise is still there?

Any comments>?

From the description you gave, the diff centre and axles will be coming out no matter what has failed. Best option is to pull the centre out and take a look. We can guess all day at the noise, but they all sound teh same over the internet :D . Rip her out and take a look. Sounds like the crown wheel and pinion have done some dental work on each other at a guess.

Layto....

Pinion Shaft had spat teeth, crown wheel was chipped to pieces... Guessing due to excessive backlash, putting a lot of stress on things...

Thanks Guys...
