I am in the procees of rebuilding my FJ40 and want to put a different engine in it
My choices were either a
Injected 250 crossflow
Clevo 351 or 302
But i am now leaning towards a holden v6 as it would use less fuel than the other engines
Also i would like to have an auto behind the engine
Just playing around with ideas at the moment but would like to see what the best choice would be
keeping i mind that I am on a bugdet

Well obviously cost is a concern or you wouldn't car about the fuel economy difference in engines. In that case the ford engine will be a cheaper fit. Go the EF engine, not much more to buy than an early Xflow but more power and torque.
Lexus V8 is probably about a five grand fit v's three and a half grand for ya ford If you're doing them yourself.
EF engine has coil pack which isn't affected by water as much as a dizzy on the EL engine.

I don't know about the lexus V8, but the three commodores I had (VR, VS, VT) I thought the engines weren't all that "revable." Sure, they'd spin to the redline, but only because the damn transmission would kick-back too readily. Overtaking on the highway used to suck - the V6 has great mid-range torque, but push the pedal too far, the trans kicks back to 2nd, the engine's screaming but the car's not accelerating well enough to justify the kickdown.bad_religion_au wrote:commo v6's and lexus v8's are too rev happy for a 40 i recon...
Other than that, I liked the Commodores. The VT could return better than 10l/100km on the highway, at respectable speeds too. Very easy to drive long distances.

Yep, and all the LPG gear is easy to get out of taxis. The commo v6 would not even come close, provided there's room in the engine bay - which there is. On the other hand if you don't want dual fuel then you're right that the commo v6 will be less thirsty.
Or - if you can get one the right age, then a 350 chev or 351 clevo are obviously going to get you more ponies per dollar than any other option.

That commo v6 is not a total dud, but geez it seems to be the most overrated engine in the country. On a good day it will make 300Nm of torque at 3600rpm. That is not "low down torque", that is an engine that needs to rev its tits off before it's any good.
A 308 will get you 340Nm at 2400 rpm. A 350 chev will get you 400Nm at 2800 rpm. An EF Falcon 6 (not even an XR6) will get you 357Nm at 3000rpm and can be gotten just as cheap as a commodore motor.
Then consider the older Ford sixes: 295Nm at 1800 rpm, 305Nm at 2000 rpm, 310Nm at 2300 rpm depending on the model.
This isn't a Holden/Ford thing.

I think you're right on both counts. However you could use a divorced transfer eg. MQ/MK... or alternatively the manual version is just a T5 five-speed, and I am pretty sure you can find a Jeep transfer case that can be mated to it... depending on how different the Jeep T5 is to the Ford T5.cloughy wrote:The auto is plenty strong enough but i don't think anyone is making an adaptor from the ford auto to a transfer

Mud drags @ Battle of the States this year. 2nd and 3rd in the V8 class were two Lexus V8 powered 4Runners on 35" rubber and standard gearing. I know what i'd choose
(1st was a trailered HJ Cruiser ute with something big in it, not sure what but it had two full size radiators!)

Funny that both 2nd and 3rd place getters with the Lexus V8's both blew there front diffs doing the drag as well.....piece of sh!t IFS.......atleast one of us is fixing that properly but

i'm not knocking the lexus option, but for the $$$ you can get better bang for bucks.
