do dana 44 off a scout fit xj's or do they need to be cut down? Is there any other thing to look out for with these axles?

Front scout D44's have 0* castor not a huge issue as you need to do spring mounts anyway but normally you will need to cut and rotate to keep pinion angles in check

not sure on width should be close but as they are good swap for a CJ being just slightly wider than a wide track CJ

quick google search for the width

Width: 58" front, 58.25" or 58.5" rear

Other things to consider:

1. front axle will be a RHS drop
2. they are 5 on 5.5 stud pattern so you will need to change both front and rear or conver the stud pattern of the scout axle also add the cost of new wheels

just about the stud pattern, will the Dana 30 or Dana35 or whatever the jeeps have in the front, will the knuckles or spindles swap over?

or is there enough room in the rear axle flange to redrill them on a 5.5" circle?

I think the Scout 44 is narrower than the D35 and D30. If it was me I'd look at puting a TJ 44 in the rear and a super 30 in the front, basically stick with the stock 30 housing and upgrade axles etc to 44 specs. The hi-pinion 30 (Cherokee) is reverse cut and is stronger then the low pinion 30 (Wrangler) anyway and can be beefed up to the 44 strength probably a lot easier than puting in a 44. You also dont loose ground clearance due to the larger 44 pumpkin. Also gets around the RHS drop etc etc.

Cheers

i take it that a fords Dana 44 has more in common with a scouts then a jeep...ie stud pattern, bugger all caster and drivers side drop?

so best option would be to pillage one from a J2000 or something like that?
i don't need no stinking quote for my sig. line!

Ford Dana 44 is Left side drop, high pinion. Dunno about caster etc.

Same stud pattern as early Jeep, ie 5 on 5.5

Did you replace the axle shafts? you might find the ears are slightly elongated meaning you'll probably spit another.
