New Shocks - 4" lift
New Shocks - 4" lift
Hello all,
I'm after a new pair of shocks for the gq. I have OME shocks on at the moment and they are great...i can't fault them except they are too short (i have around 4" lift)
What shocks have similar characteristics to the OME? I dont tow and do a lot of city driving as well. I would love it if they made longer ones
Thanks in advance
Jimmy

as far as i now that is the longest shock ome do to suit a gq or gu ridepro do shocks for the rear of a gq right up to about 790 open length prob the best hting to do is, take your shocks off flex the back end up then measure the distance between the shock mounts, otherwise you are allways going to be guesing to some extent. thats my opinion anyways i put the n19l n29l's in knowing i would prob have to make some locating cones up for when the coils fell out!

I would be surprised if you needed shocks that long unless you have a soft 5 inch lift. Before you buy just check by undoing one of your rear shocks and flex it up until you are happy and then measure the desired shock length.
Dobinsons are just over 730mm. $95
Procomps must have something close to what you are after. $115

ridepro do a shock that is 730mm fully extended or longer still at 760mm, i have a mate with the 760's in a gu qith 4 inch king springs and is coils are loose enough at full articulation that you could pull them out by hand if you got undr their, but they dont actually fall out, hes about to put limiting straps on it just incase

I run swaybars (they have been extended) on road and sometimes offroad and the shocks still limit flex. I have tested this a few times in the shed and out in the bush.
On the weekend i will measure it all up with the shocks off. My rear is a 5" and the front is 4" but they are heavy duty coils and by no means soft. I just need to get a jack that has enough travel.
What are ppl using for 5 and 6" lifts?? I thought shock selection would be easy with 4".
Can anyone tell me a brand of shock that rides the same or simlar as OME? I dont want to get longer shocks if the ride is going to be compromised.
Anyway thanks for everyones help.

If you are happy with OME, stick with it and get the long travel rear nissan ones and go the N73L for the front (landcrusier) and extend the front shock towers with spacers. Much better artciulation but you need rubber castor bushes to get full movement. I heard pedders are bringing out rubber castor bushes very soon

Ok i haven't measured actual travel yet without shocks but i will be doing that tomorrow.
I have a set of Rancho 900's adjustables Brand new that were going to go on my surf ages ago.
I measured them and they are around 650mm extended which is a good 90-100mm longer than the ones i have on it. My only problem is they are pin to eye instead of pin to pin. Is it worth buying pin to eye convertes? Are they hard to make? Who sells them and how much???
Thanks again everyone.

rancho might be ok, as the shock you buy because they come in the length you want, but they dont have the valving you need generally, so you need to decide do you need "x" travel, not as well controlled, effecting handling, turn in, stability, or, well controlled "x' travel, allowing you drive the car harder, and or better, over the same obstacle.
Dont think the shock isnt the biggest part of making your vehicle drive as well as it can, so if you want a $120 ride, buy a $120 shock, if you want better than that, dont buy overpriced american shocks that come in the lengths you want either.
Valving, compression, and rebound, are the important ones.

Thanks for that and i understand. I also am not much of a fan of Ranchos either however i have a brand new adjustable set laying around that i want to try out at least. If i dont like them i will simply take them out and put my ome on untill i get the $$ to buy a better set.
I think i will just make the pin to eye converter as it doesnt look hard.
Now i'm just after the rears. My jack with lots of wood was still not beig enough to flex the rear end with the current shocks unbolted :( The N29's are around 715mm extended and are too short and i can still only guess that i need around 750mm extended.
Can anyone give me a part number for a shock with this length please?
I might give pro comp a try, where can i get these? I'm in melb
Thanks again

For Procomps the part number is 929546 for extended length 750mm. I am sure will be happy with the "American crap". I can get a pair to your door for $245 including freight.
