New Navara Buyer

Post by beebee »

Hey guys,
I'm looking into buying a Navara to use as a work and tow vehicle. Is the 3L Diesel the better option or the petrol? What's the economy like and are there any pre-existing problems with any of the models?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

PS Will a 3.0L Diesel motor pull the 3t towing capacity?

IF your talking about the new navaras and pathfinders new shape i bulieve they are 2.5L tubro intercooled diesel, or a 4.0L V6 petrol. Both go pretty hard but im unsure of their towing capacity. i have driven both as i used to do Pre delivery inspections and road tests at a nissan dealer.

Hope this helps.

the current navarras has 3 main models. the stx which has the 2.5 intercooled turbo deisel at 128kw or the 4.0 petroel. both in 4x4 and 2 wheel drive. this is the USA ver ie bigger and more upmarket.

the others are the 3.0 turbo deisel 4x4 110kw in single and double cab and the 2.5 intercooled turbo deisel 105kw? 2 wheel drive in single and double cab.

the 3.0 litre wll pull 3 tonne without problem however whatch your rules. for eg 3 tonne trailer requires breakawy brakes etc and most likly will need a truck lience (this is in NZ).

i have a single cab flatdeck 3 litre model for a work ute. for towing i recommend the deisel anyday.

Hi dave,

the 2.5 TD is the tow vehicle of choice for the tow vehicle at Gold Coast Nautiques. There is a few threads on www.wake.com.au regarding the towing capacity and performance of the navara's and pathfinders. One bloke has been having problems with engine vibrations in his petrol V6 at idle speed and has had everything but the ingine replaced and the problem is still not fixed. see http://www.wake.com.au/modules.php?name ... c786b9f0f2

and

scroll half way down this page to see how big the boats are compared to the nissans!!!

does it matter economy is going to be if its going to be a wileymobile???

Thanks Dan I'll have a look at those links later.

I guess I didn't really specify that it's not really the "NEW" Navaras that I'm interested in, rater those about 3-5 years old.

So I guess the 3.0L Diesel would be the pick of the bunch for towing then??

Is it the same 3L that's in the Patrol? Don't they have issues with longevity?

Thanks again,
Dave

PS And Dan - this one wont be a wileymobile

afaik its been mentioned here the early 3litre turbo's had cooling issues and there was a recall in which the sump was replaced with a bigger one. if in doubt fit an oil cooler ;) (which is something i would like to do myself).

only other problems i've seen mentioned is EGR valve and pressure sensor.

one of ours is going in to the shop tomorrow to sort out an intermittant problem so that might be interesting to see.

the other ones that are around that age are the 2.7 deisel (atmo and turbo) and 3.2 deisel (atmo and turbo) both are less powered than the later 3.0 turbo.

navara 3l diesels are all 2002 on and don't seem to have the reports like the patrols. Perhaps the issue was addressed by then. the patrol probs seem to be the early series in the late 90's very early 00's
