Sydneysiders here's your chance Navigation Practice Exercise

Post by cebarry »

Eugene and I have got a lot out of 4wd sport over the years and had so much fun particularly in the Navigation stages/events.
We are not v. good at it but we felt it was time to help others out to gain some gps experience and then have no excuse when it comes to taking part in events like Rudi's Navrun's or even the OBC.
You have to start somewhere.
So we have set about plotting a 'c' grade course through the Watagans State Forest.
This will NOT be timed, or a competition, it is purely an opportunity for anyone with a 4bee and good All Terrain tyres and a gps of course, to come along and see if they can find their way by using a list of co-ordinates we will supply.
We are offering everyone the chance to come along either on 26th or the 27th Aug, you choose which day, cos we are putting the same course on both days, to give those that might have to work Sat a chance to attend on the Sun.

If it proves popular then we intend running another exercise up at Stockton Beach, when it gets warmer. Afterall a lot of the Nav events are run in sand too.
Then by next year everyone will be more confident of taking part in the excellent NavRun's and maybe the OBC.

Celia

Thats sounds like a great idea,I know i would be keen to learn more about navigation and i could probably muster up a few more people.

My only drama is that on the 12th & 13th of August i have the WE ROCK finals on out at the Tuff Truck Property..

Would there be any chance on maybe setting another date for this???

Hey Jamie,

Yeah we realised too late that We Rock was on the same weekend.....so if the general consensus is to change the date then we will change it.
Moving it to the 26th/27th August.
Hows that?
You can never please everyone and if it seems popular we will be willing to put it on another time again.

We have got to get some navigators happening, so that if Rudi brings an interstate type Navrun to NSW we can kick the Mexicans butts! They are so far ahead of us on this, so we need to get practicing.

Well done Celia. We are definetly doing a Navrun in 2007 in NSW near Bathurst/ Lithgow, dates announced very soon.

Your event/course I am sure will be an excellant introduction into our events by giving the competitors a rough idea and practice on navigation.

Just for the record, we had 8 out of the 20 or so teams on our last Navrun in which were new and some had never ever used a GPS before- some finished in the top 10 and now know their navigation back to front.

So what I am saying, it down't matter if you have never done a nav. event before- try it and learn- its the only way, and you still have fun anyway.

Good luck Eugene and Celia and hope to see you at our Navrun in NSW.

Great to see people are keen......
we'll get the flyer posted in the next week with all the info.
In the meantime dust off the gps and make sure you know how to work it.....set the datum and how to punch in the co-ordinates... i.e. use it.
We will not be giving you a lesson on use....just the co-ordinates to follow.
But as it won't be timed or a competition you will have time to do it at your own pace and take it easy, cos otherwise if you rush you'll be overshooting gps points and waste a lot of time finding the right way.
It's a fun introduction......and won't be hard either.

Look forward to seeing ya all there but you'll have to book in as numbers are limited, even tho we'll run it on the Sat and again on the Sun.

Cheers,
Eugene & Celia

I'm dead set keen after competing with Ruffy in the Pirahna Pursuit my nav has improved out of sight, get out there and give it a go people!

The beauty of this arrangement is there's going to be a few people who can help others out if they need help.

Anyway 4WDTV will be coming along for the ride and to get a story on the great opportunity to improve nav skills for free!!!! :D

Awesome work Celia! See you all there.

.......to clarify, there will be a small participation fee of $25 per vehicle, which will go to our nominated "Drive4Life" charity, Northcott Cripple Childrens Assoc.
Some of you might know we are on the organizing D4L committee and ran a very successful trip to the High Country last April, we had 64 cars and $74,000 was raised by all those that took part. Everyone paid the same $1,000 donation per car, trip leaders and the committee included.
The money raised is used to adapt motorized wheelchairs for cripple kiddies which assists them to remain mobile and somewhat independant .

So our wheels help them have theirs....... and it's a win win situation.

Thanks 'Daisy' for posting flyer info later :)

$25 is nothing in the scheme of things and we get to help out a great cause too! I'm happy to part with $25 for charity and get a great day out as well.

Nav Exercise.......practice

Post by cebarry »

Numbers are growing gradually....interest is def there. Prob get a rush nearer the dates......which is good cos we'll def continue with the idea of including one to Stockton......"gps points out on the Dunes"....will be fun too. Maybe learning to use a hand held compass also...nothing hard tho!
We're going back to the Watagans early Aug to check out the route....the rumours about closures and see if there's anything further on the "Shooting" notices we saw up, when we went originally.

Will post an update after that......

Hey Boof,
We'll be there 5th/6th with Tappa & friends....so def. hope to catch up somehow.
Great to know your replacement engine is going well.....and your beast is back ontrack.
Ateco.... this weekend and I'm having withdrawal symtoms. You'll have to get to compete next year, it's the best comp. Max Brealocker is the only Sydneysider going I think. He did well last year so my monies on him to again this year.
Did you get your e from SharynvdH saying the OBC DVD will be out in Aug and it's looking great!
Jason Michael's (Yankie team) Disco is still in oz being fitted with Patrol running gear etc by Couchie! ...then shipped back and ready for their return to the OBC in 08.
Say hi to Shane too......
See ya soon,

Please note............Anyone interested but not sure about their GPS being up to scratch....a handheld gps will be fine......you don't need anything else. It's just to get you into using one and gaining confidence.

Hello peoples........Update time........we had a trip up to the Watagans this past weekend, had a ball driving a track we hadn't before....thanks to Charles and Jen.....also retraced the co-ordinate route on the way in.
All's well and we are ready!
As mentioned we will be camping at the Pines on Sat night for those that are coming up in the arvo already....for Sunday.
As expected Sunday is proving more popular...so those that are still deciding, can you make it on Sat? as there are still places......you are welcome to camp Sat nite afterwards,if you wish too.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Post by cebarry »

Hey Caleb, don't stress.....it's not going to be complicated... our object is to make it a fun experience for everyone and if you get lost just go back to a point and try a diff. track.
We will be supplying a few important pace notes to everyone, to help along the way....
and if you take the wrong turn you'll soon work it out.
As the course is not being timed you can taken as long as you like.

The secret is to go at a reasonable pace and concentrate! so you don't overshoot points.

All the tracks are easy, enjoyable and I've placed "Caution" signs where I felt they were needed at T intersections etc.

Of course there will be others following you or you might catch up with those ahead.....hopefully everyone will not end up playing follow my leader cos that could work against you as they might be lost!!! So hang back and wait rather......
People won't learn either...which will defeat the object!.....

We are hoping everyone enjoys themselves and gains confidence and then we'll organise another up at Stockton Beach when it warms up.

For those worried about crowds.......there is still room on the Sat run.
So if you thinking about it.....book in quick!
Some who showed interest have still to confirm bookings too......we need to know how many so we can print enough sheets etc.

Thanks,

Cheers,
Celia & Eugene
