diff upgrade? and coils wat set up?

Post by flynn »

did a bit of hunting and found nothing useful....

was thinking about upgrading my diffs for some reason...

just curious about what wat the stronger diffs are..better ratios? and wat have ya

i currently have 4.88 hilux.... rear pumpkin is centre and front is drivers(right)side.

note: this is a daily driver...and i have dual trannys so reduction isnt an issue...

so if u had a choice wat would u go??? also i was thinkin about going coils... wat set up would u go for maximum flex....

From what you seem to be after I would guess that GQ diffs would be the way to go. Centred pumpkin, coil mounts and arm brackets already there, strong, cheap, heaps of ratios available.

That or 80 series diffs would be the go. Check Zook60's thread in members, he is putting GQ's under his lux as we speak.

yeah but my shackles are 'illegal' according to the boys in blue and its a $225 fine to get caught with them still on so i figured hey y not go coil....and whilst im at it go somethin abit bigger and better down there

that way i call technicality and say its a different mod and get another $75 fine and 1 point which would then put me on -1 points....

honestly who cares if ur mud flaps are too small at least i had some...

In the new 4x4 builder they test a stock dana 60 it took 8000psi and 110degrees of twist to break. while a longfeild took 8600psi and 170 degrees of twist.

stock toy unit only took 2500psi and 40 degrees( hate to see what a stock zook took)

already have massive extended brake lines....rhs drivelines...everything is always at least $100 more than wat u plan to do....

but because im lazy il prolly keep the diffs and just save up for something i really do need.....like coils....

but seriously wat coil set up should i go for max flex....i was thinkin 3link a frame would be the way to go....

If you were going to all the trouble of doing an A-frame, you should do it right, a Rangie one aint gunna be that strong, is going to restrict what you can do with the susspension, because of size and the ball joint that is used as the point of flex aint got much misalignment.

a disco one would be cheep though

y do you want coils? ive never heard you complain about the ride so i presume flex? In which case y not go three quarter or even dare i say it drop shackles? To get GQ diffs or even coil yours is going to cost you so much in engineering if you can even find someone to do it in QLD. GQ diffs would need to be cut down to be legal here i would think coz can only go 50mm in track to be legal and being legal is the reason you started talking about this anyway....theres no point if you want to keep it fairly legal looking and on the road.

like i said dude, you wont break much atm, so go the the IFS widetrack rear diff and IFS hub assemblies. then A frame dobbin style rear, and 5 link front (panhard and castor arms for now)

keep it simple and not 6 inches wider with GQs, they are huge, i have one sitting next to a sixty diff here and i need rear wheel spacers to even it up.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

AFAIK you can only go 50 mm above the donor axle width, and as long as it is all covered by flares etc, it should be engineerable. (if it aint, then I could be in deep doggy-doo)

i thought the same thing about the track increase.. as long as iut is covered (not lawn edging) then it is legal if it is "safe" like mr mechanic said my diff swap wouldnt be a problem as it included a break upgrade and suspension upgrade.
