It will plug into a USB port and provide a GPS satelite feed into navigation software. If you are running a laptop, the only two options I've seen with regards to software is Oziexplorer and Freedrive. Oziexplorer needs maps. You need to buy the software but I'm sure some kind souls with provide you with a map or two. Freedrive is freeware. You just need to join a UK forum and then you can download it. You then need to get Destinator maps. Destinator is GPS software for PDA's but some smart cookie wrote software to run Destinator maps on a laptop. If download via bit torrents, you'll find Destinator Australia maps.
You can try something like this.

I've never used one but if heat is an issue it might be worth looking at.

The site says you still need the Destinator program to allow communucation between your computer and gps reciever? Freedrive is just an interface to show the maps, it does not have anything to do with the gps reciever..Destinator must be used to do that.Emo wrote:Freedrive is freeware. Have you used FreeDrive? and with what gps program?

You just need Destinator maps. Unless it is part of the Freedrive download. I just downloaded Freedrive, put the Destinator maps in the right spot and away it went.HotFourOk wrote:The site says you still need the Destinator program to allow communucation between your computer and gps reciever? I've always wondered if it would be worth buying a "real" GPS to use with your laptop. In that case, if/when the laptop dies (is it really that unlikely on a simpson trip in a zook?) or even has serious software/driver trouble (not likely you'll be able to log into the nearest Maccas WiFi), you'll still have useable GPS navigation.
Or of course you could learn how to use a map and compass...
