okay this really sucks
im getting at the stage when i realise a sierra is too small for what i want ya know...
i have 92 swb sierra...
new soft top (ute style)
got old one too
motor is on the brink, clutch is shit
8 month old 30" muddies on it
extended shackles
bullbar + spotties
how much you guys reckon i could get for it $2,000?
now im looking at getting something bigger, thats practicle and that i can go offroad and have some fun
im thinking twin cab hilux diesel...

You probably get 3k for it so long as body is neat. Most sierra owners arent too worried about pulling an engine out - it's pretty easy to do.

Dont forget though, any big 4by is gonna use twice the fuel of the sierra. At a MINIMUM.
If that puts you off, ask yourself will you ever do a big trip that you need the space for etc etc.

shit, mine was a 92 SSR-X 2.4td and it had no go and was thirsty, not to mention I destroyed the IFS on 31's. (ball joint, cv, etc...) My new ZD30 is a pleasure to drive and uses under 10Lt/100kms even around town, and towing is very economical.what are the diesels like on fuel?

Paid 5K, and spent another 5K on it over the years, with Bullbar, snorkel, exhaust, extractors, new alternator, new starter motor, carby rebuild, half an engine overhaul while doing clutch, lighting upgrades, heavy-duty clutch (first one died on Stockton of all places to lose a clutch), UHF radios, CD player (dust killed it real fast, was not a good decision)
Then sold the whole thing for 4K :(
But I got so tired of the eternal choice, Namely:
Camping gear, recovery gear, or family - Choose ONE
I ended up with a Diesel GQ with factory lockers, snorkel, b/bar and aftermarket turbo. It's not HALF the fun the zook was, but it sure holds us all a whole lot more easily.

4 months ago i looked at one, 83ish 2door crate 350 on straight lpg CHEAP
2"body and sus lift front and rear maxidrives rear sailsbury diff all for 5.5k as is. needed a bit of love for under 800 diy you would have had a beaty of a rig
just look round at your options, LPG is cheap and still will be for a while yet whilst deisel may not be

Pretty large vehicle though, not so much of a toy off-road.

No seriously, if you honestly want a bigger 4by that you dont want to mod to the hilt and go nuts on then your idea of a hilux is not too bad.
Dont bother with a range rover cause by the sounds of it your not real into maintaining your vehicle 5 days a week
I would just hold onto the zook for as long as you can, then when/if the engine goes make a choice, or spend afew $$$ now to fix wats needed to be fixed and enjoy it for abit longer.
About not looking for a house.... i tell you this THE SOONER YOU START LOOKING THE BETTER OFF YOU WILL BE.... i am kicking myself everyday for not putting more effort into a house purchase three or so years ago. But I do see the other side of it.... if you are on your own and your not earning a shit load then yeah its hard (read impossible) these days

the surf gets better k's then my sierra (when the engine was good)

later on in life if i have a good paying job..... sierra will be fun as a second car just for a toy...
but i just cant afford that at the moment
sierras are the cheapest daily driver fourby. if you can't afford to keep one going, i doubt anything else will do. if you have no room for stuff it's because you're using a ute style soft top. go back to your fullsize top and build yourself a storage basket for the back area. mates can find their own transport. i just foresee misery if you ditch the sierra and run off to a silver bullet that won't solve your problems.
service the carby if your fuel consumption is high. also don't use so much right foot. it's slow, get used to it. more revs = more fuel but not more speed.

Sell the Sierra and buy a Hilux .. (I did and the hilux is still sitting in the driveway almost two years later .. but it's a great idea )
A dualcab Lux is not that bad as a commuter (as good as a sierra) but it will never be "fun" like a sierra is.. But a Zuk is not a terribly "practicle" vehicle..
That said if anyone wanted to swap me a Zuk for my Lux .. I would most likley say yes on the spot and throw the Lux keys at them ..

Yes the Patrol has some problems, but they were likely there when I bought it and so my own stupid fault. But whilst the zook was fun, it was fun with a lot of downsides.

:( and it was ROUGH AS GUTS to drive out bush. Every bump, hump, and rock ended up being transferred as a thump into your lower back, which at my age I can only take for so long before it's not quite so fun anymore.
:( and in convoy on dirt roads, you got absolutely filthy. I have often been able to FEEL the grit in my hair at the end of a day in convoy in her, and been so envious of those getting out of their better sealed, better suspended, air-con'd, larger wheeled 4WD's looking fresh as daisy's when I was tired, dirty, and sore all over.
The Patrol doesn't even notice the bumps the zook used to transfer to my spine.
It idles up hills in third that the zook used to climb only by screaming at 3000rpm in low low.
It holds my whole family without compromising anything i.e. recovery gear, and camping, and family, and sometimes even a friend or two as well, all fit in there.
AND ABOVE ALL it can be driven to places other than the local area to go 4WDing. It was no fun driving the zook from Canberra to Stockton Beach, whereas that's where the Patrol is at the moment, and it cruise-controlled it's way up here effortlessly. It laps up long highway hours effortlessly and comfortably. Something the Zook will never do no matter how many dollars you throw at it.

A good friend of mine has a 2.4l td surf, nice to drive and pretty good on the beach (crap on the rocks but). Very popular car around the coast where i come from (south of perth). Economy is pretty good and very comfortable and quiet with full lekky windows and air con.
