Ok it happend to me today crawling up a hill in 4 high on a big sideways angle heard a small bang and were stuck in 2 wheel drive had a good idea what it was from reading on the board transfercase lever was jamed pulled out lever put it bag in in the opposite shift rail give it a wack with my had and shes all good .
So problem fixed for now but dose anyone no why it happens and is there a fix

Pops out cause ur shift bushing is worn and gives the lever room to move/ pop out- as I've been led to understand...
A new urethane shift sheet/bushing is the fix according to these DIY links, bearing wholesalers or the like would be the go.

Is your truck body lifted at all ?? (body shifts a little on the sideslope knocks the gear lever)
The shift sheet is only a problem when changing from high to low etc ..
The gears should not jump out under load that sounds more like a setup issue to me..

Stumped's zook with 5.14's has similar issue with jumping out of 4wd similar to you, he too looked at the shimming up of the front output to provide a better contace. Will try to contact him and see what he did in the end.
