Extractors and insurance companies

Extractors and insurance companies
Just rang the insurance company (thought I'd do the right thing.....) to check up extractors are OK before ordering a set. Have been told no can't fit them as anything that increases the power of the vehicle is not allowed!
Even the threat of taking our three vehicles insurance policies elsewhere didn't make them think twice.
Who are you other guys with extractors insured with and how much are you paying roughly?
Me: Western QBE, 34yo, Rating 1, ~$300 full comprehensive.

Tell them to shove it
they will probably ask why. so you tell them you can't afford
genuine replacements cause your manifold is stuffed and headers
(don't say extractors- it makes you sound like a hoon )
are the cheapest option. If they still dont want your business bad luck
to them. GIO, Aami even NRMA will insure a modified (within reason)
car.

Yep, I tried calling them headers first and the response was " What are you changing, just the exhaust?"
I also explained the current manifold is cracked and Daihatsu want an arm and a leg for a genuine replacement..... Might actually ring them and get a price- hopefully they aren't made anymore and then I'll write a really nasty letter to the insurance company saying my vehicle is unroadworthy due to a cracked manifold and they won't let me fix it!

Hi David,
You'll find that there are changes in policy from coy. to coy. I've found that quite a lot of them will accept things like body & suspension lifts as well as extractors and sports exhausts on small 4wd's as it is purely for off road capability improvement.
I'm currently with Alliance Insurance and am paying $600 (I do live in Sydney though) and have an agreed value of $14,500 on mine. I have enquired about all the mods I want to do and they have accepted all mods.
If you don't have any luck with them I would suggest you try NRMA, RAC or AAMI. They will be able to inpect the vehicle and see that its not a performance machine.
Failing that there are specialist 4wd insurers who'll cover everything and anything for a price.
Let me know how you go as I worked in that crappy industry for 11 years and still have some contacts.
Good luck

Thanks for the tip Paul- I'll check out Alliance.
Have you checked out if they'll cover you off road? A lot of companies don't, at least QBE do cover that. They will cover you anywhere provided you're not doing anything illegal.
I checked with the RAA here in SA when I first bought it (same underwriter as NRMA) and they don't cover 4WDs off road!

Paul is that Royal Sun Alliance your with? I've been trying to find them online.
Discovered Just Car Insurance and they sound promising- they're part of the same group as Royal Sun Alliance (Promena). Did an online quote and they even have a huge list of mods to select from including headers/ extractors, raised suspension, boost controllers, etc etc. Never seen any online quotes with those options before so it looks promising.

Sorry matem I misspelt it. It's Allianz Insurance Group Ph: 131 000 as they don't have an online quoting system. And they do cover off road.
Just Car insurance is run by AAMI. They may be a good option too, but they may be pricey.

AAMI being the same group ie Promena. God I now know why I left that industry... nothing but headaches with Insurance Coys.

I simply don't mention the extractors...never had a problem and I've claimed twice.
Be very carful of Allianz....the accepted my insurance when I just had 2.5" suspension lift, and 2 weeks later rejected it and I was uninsured!! Said they didn't cover my modification (it was on the car when I bought it)

Thanks for all the tips guys. Will check out Allianz.
Murray I've been down the road of not mentioning things to insurance companies- I'd rather do things legally if I can. I had a 4WD turbo Laser in my younger years- it had a high flowed turbo, chip, electronic boost controller, lowered suspension- all of which the insurance company knew little about.
I'm ordering the extractors and am going to change companies.
Just Car insurance came back with $469 plus an extra $35 to protect rating 1 (something QBE already included), the excess is $400 PLUS an extra $400 due to the modifications!!!! The excess with QBE is only $250..... Think I'll keep on shopping.

Discovered Allianz do have an online quote system, here's the response I got after entering all the relevant info:
DECLINATURE Unfortunately, we cannot offer you insurance for the following reason: Allianz Cannot offer you a quote as your Vehicle and accessories exceed our sum insured limits. All details for this quote will be discarded.
And there wasn't even anywhere to specify extractors! I think the killer was $2000 in accessories (alarm/ immobiliser, aircon, tow bar, central locking, driving lights, dual batteries, window tinting, roof racks.....)
What a joke!

just car insurance dont care what modifications you have, you could have a rocket enging attached, and they will insure it...........as long as it is legal. that is, roadworthy and engineered if need be. knowing that they insure modified cars, i assume they will check the cars come claim time. my f truck is insured with them, but i dont want to know what will happen come claim time!!

Best move I ever made. Insure you fully offroad - all your 4wd Mods are no worries including things like Big Tyres & Body Lifts etc, Big Suspensions, Turbos etc etc. Even insure you for up to $2000 worth of camping gear from memory...
Premiums have always been reasonable - the only claim I have ever made ( about $3000 worth of self inflicted idiocy ) was completely painless. Pay by the month as well.
Here's the website -

Well they must have changed something - I had my Feroza insured with them for 5 years
Since when has a Feroza not been considered a 4wd
Very strange if you ask me.....
Later - Mike H.
Tell me about it!! I argued with them and they wouldn't accept my vehicle at all!!! This was last year. Ended up going with TCIS..

Received a quote from the above company today. Am pleased to say they do cover Ferozas, and the quote and excess is very reasonable.
The best part is extractors and a 2" mandrel exhaust system aren't a problem!
