if no smoke then most likly lack of fuel. check filter and check the pump for leaks.

When under load, can a lack of compression cause power issues?

i'd be thinking about it logically. if you're going up a hill, is your fuel pickup in a bad position? i had a pintara that used to stall out around long right handers as the pickup was badly positioned. was it down less than a quarter on the fuel?

low compression will cause power issues all the time, not just under load.

Check the rubber hose between fuel filter and injection pumps for signs of cracking/deterioration... What tyres are you running? 33's will suck mega power on stock ratio's... if they are 30/31's you shouldnt notice it too much.

Other than that, see if there are any rattles in the fuel tank that might indicate a lose sender unit.

How much oil does it use? whats fuel economy like... if it loses heaps of oil and fuel, these are signs of low compression/worn motor = poor power.

Could maybe look into doing your injectors, can pick them up for bout $400 from a joint in perth (hi-flo IIRC) all up re-co if you install them yourself.
Cheers,
Dan.

Slowing down on hills? Then I think the tow rope must have come off the back of the Rangie that was pulling you up the hill in the first place...!

(Sorry, couldn't resist that!)

Seriously, as others have said, check air and fuel feed to a diesel, you may find this to be the cause. Have you got a dragging brake or siezed park brake cable? This may not be obvious until a hill, as it would be like towing a big trailer..

i run 33" but at the start is was ok going up hill then all of a sudden it was like towing a mack up the hill that is how bad it is

and i think it maybe low on compression coz it take ages to strat

Its momentum at the start of the hill keeping you going... 33's really suck the power, change your diff ratios to 4.88's ($500 in gears 2nd hand from the forsale section, then bout the same in labour at a diff joint if your R&R your own banjos), and maybe look into why you have poor compression. What kind of smoke does it puff on start up?
Cheers,
Dan.

That would be oil due to worn rings.... hence bad compression --> low power. These motors definately are not a power house at anything above 20km/hr. For the time being if u wanna run 33's, change your diff ratios...

i'am 200% sure that it is not the 33" or the bad compression that it slowing it down that much

Still think it is the larger tyres and an air leak. The way it was blowing smoke when it was surging and not at other times is the sameas what was happening to mine when I had the air leak. It sounded and felt like air when we primed the pump (no resistance with the first couple of pumps) and ran ok after that. One way to check is to use some clear tube somewhere between the filter and the injector pump an look for air bubbles.
