They wouldn't have to be that long. Most of the extra length built into those ones is for the thread on the heim..

also, if you use a shock that doesn't have an adjuster doodad on the body end of it, you could have the whole of the shock body within the mount, not hanging out and adding more length like the one in the pic.

Looks cool, I was thinking the body of the chick might have to support to much weight.

The only real issue is that coilovers like SAW and stuff have a 1.5" or 2" rod, so they would be as wide as that thing is! Twice the diameter of shock!

Although the shock is clearly taking no weight?
