Interior / Map lights

Post by sneaky_pete »

Im awaiting to get my roof console, but it doesnt come with any lights on it.

Anyone know of a good place or site that sells good quality map/interior lights? Ive had a look around at the obvious ones (hella, ebay etc) but nothing really outstanding.

Any ideas?

Cheers

I used an interior light from a Toyota Lexcen - same Hella unit as the Calias and Fairlane or Fairmont of similar vintage. It's got a door light and two halogen map lights at the front. I payed $2.50 at my local wrecker (including globes :)), they go on ebay for around $30 or so.

I would get one from a wrecker; if you look around you'll find one with separate switches for driver and passenger side, as well as a main cabin light... in lots of cars, I once got one from a higher-end model of sigma, but obviously there would be better, newer options by now.

I would say you will get one a lot cheaper this way and there will be nothing wrong with it.
This is not legal advice.

I got some aircraft map lights from here :-
http://www.steinair.com/lights.htm
I got two of the red LED lamps and fitted them to the sides of my Dept. of the Interior roof console. They look very smart and have a bright, red directional light that doesn't destroy your night vision. The only downside is that anything in red on the map becomes invisible. You can also get white and green versions. Not overly cheap, but I couldn't find anything else as neat and compact as these babies. Jed at Steinair was very helpful, I faxed my credit card details and he shredded the fax after the transaction. They took just over a week to arrive from the US.
I also fitted a Hella EuroLED dual red/white light to my roof console, once again, bloody expensive, but it was just what I needed. White light for normal use, and red when out 4WDing at night.
The eyeball LED lights on the Steinair website look good too, and are cheaper.
Regards,
Michael.

I did the same as skoonah, but attached mine to the custom console I made and wired it to the existing interior light switch so it comes on with the door open (if I want).

And has it's own switch as well on the end.

$20 from super cheap :P

Thanks mate,
yeah I'm gonna do a write up of it eventually, as well as for how I did my custom interior panels and my drop down camping table.

I've gone with the Super Cheap fluro in the back of the zook mate. Can't go wrong with that. You won't be able to see out of the windows with it on at night. They are preeeety good in small spaces.

That why I also installed the little blue leds you can see

I also have a supercheap fluro in the back also wired to the switch so it comes on when the back door opens. I just zippy tied it to the roll bar that goes across the back of the top of the roof interior.

It doesn't take a second to come on and the light it gives shits all over the standard factory five watt crappy bulbs!

Narva are now making some very high quality interior lights in round and striaght versions - they have "off-on-door" switch built in, so they are pretty much a drop in replacement for a normal lamp - very swish ...

There is a 10W, 13W round and 13W straight versions - have a look at the website ...

Product #'s 87300, 87320 & 87340 respectively ..
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...

keep an eye out for plane wrecks. they looklike the lights/air con things out of planes, or busses/coaches.

you can get 6" white led light bars, like ricer boys, or you can get the proper neons, but might cost more. red neons give a red october sub feel.

Have a look at the map lights on an AU or BA Falcon. They are very similar to the ones pictured. I got some from a Tarago. Go for a walk around a car wrecker and see what is available. Most Fairlanes and more upmarket Jap stuff have them.

I got mine out of an older model mazda sedan from a wreckers for 5 bucks. It has an interior light too and the map lights are fantastic.
Now the missus can read her mags etc at night without the light annoying me while I drive :D
