engine for HJ60
I have a 83 HJ60 with 445000km on the clock, and I resently put on som 35" tyres, so the old 2H engine is having a bit of problems with the new tyres.
I have 3 options for more power
1. I can get my hand on a brand new 1HZ engine.
Pros: Very nice engine.
Cons: Need some modification to fit. Need a new t-case. Expensive
2. A 2HT, run 85000 since rebuild.
pros: less expensive, minor modification.
cons: Not new.
3. Turbo/IC the exsisting 2H
Pros: The cheapest solution.
cons: Old engine, Run a lot of KM.
Question is:
What will you recommend. I'm a student so prices should be considered
It's my DD

There is another option - Go back to 32" tyres.
Of the three options you have given, the cheapest would be the 12HT, Reason - I personnly would not put a turbo on a motor that has done over 400K, so you can add the cost of a rebuild to your third option.
A 1HZ would be nice but engine conversions usually come with lots and lots of hidden costs, you should find someone who has done the swap to let you know the pros and cons.
If you are worried about the 12HT not being knew, just rebuild your 2H for now, treat it kindly service it well, and then when you can afford it, turbo it.
I hope this has not confused you even more
Best of luck

12HT- i have one so i am bias- i went through the same agonizing engine / vehicle choice before i bought my 4by
the 12HT puts out the same power as a 1hz according to official figures but the 12HT prob put out more torque and it also reaches max power much lower in the rev range (feels much more powerful to drive).
also, and i know people will say i am bull shitting you here, but on long runs with no roof rack, relatively unladen and sitting on 100ks i get 10 km / litre. i have no idea why my fuel economy is so good-needless to say i am avoiding any major engine work in case i upset some sort of delicate balance (i think most people get about 8 ks per litre)
comparatively, the best you can expect from a 1hz in a 60 series is 6 or 7 ks per litre (and they suck balls in sand dunes cos they are so gutless)
there is no timing belt to snap (or replace) in a 12HT as they are a simple push rod engine from the good old days.
ALSO (the list continues....), a 12HT will easily sit on 110, and will reach 130 quite quickly for overtaking- a 1hz battles to do 120
so to recap- cheaper for you to get hold of, less modification to fit, more power, less fuel, stronger engine design
it absolutely escapes me why toyota stopped using these engines-the only thing the 1hz has going for it is reliability, which the 12HT has anyway.
85,000 km is barely run in for a toyota diesel by the way....
hope this helps

Emissions mainly- the old pushrod diesel wasnt efficient enough for the new emissions regulations, and OHC and a few other things helped it...rowan wrote:

Plus id say they didnt want to make a 4.0L diesel block, and 4.2 diesel block (1hz and 1HD blocks are the same, and here ends any similarities!)

you mean gearbox?fond wrote:anybody who knows if a 12ht fits a 1983 H55F t-case ?
Im pretty sure it will as the 2H and 12HT share the block. So at worst you might have to use a 1983 clutch if the splines on the gearbox input shaft are acrually different from early to late 2h/12ht (dont think they are)
Thanks, that was just the answer i was hoping forShadow wrote:you mean gearbox?fond wrote:anybody who knows if a 12ht fits a 1983 H55F t-case ?
