60s Gearbox/Transfer Question

Hey,

Mate has jus bought a 60s.

Apparently the seal between the box and transfer is crap and the oil passes from one into the other.

He has heard that you can put a hose between the 2 filler plugs so the oil evens out.
Is this correct? or anyone else know of this problem? and how to deal wioth it?

This is exactly what ive been told by him so if im wrong, dont shoot the messenger!

yeah you can do that but you should pull it apart and fix it properly. i'd be stressin out about one draining into the other.

Justin, its a very common problem with cruisers. Yes you can pull it all apart to replace the seal but quite frankly its not worth doing unless you are planning on pulling the box/transfer out for other problems. Your mate is right, there is an of the shelf kit that links the 2 filler plugs to equalise the fluids. Its an easy fix and many including myself have had this mod for years without any problems. Repco stocks the kit, retails for about $50, part no BPH2 for FJ60, FJ62 and HJ60.

Yeah i think so too.
But if he does it that way the 2 filler holes are at different heights so they wont keep an even amount of oil in them...

that was my worry with the different heights but mine has this fix, was on the car when i bought it and it has run fine , unsure of how long its been on but ive had it for 1 year and have flogged the ring out of it with no dramas

I had this explained to me in another thread.

The oil is actually pushed (pumped?) into the transfer case which creats a small pressure in the transfer case. This pressure pushes oil uphill through the pipe and back into the gearbox.

Unless you plan on rebuilding the transfer (bearings etc, maybe new shaft?) theres no point replacing the seal as it will just fail again.
