Okey dokey, the first serious topic for this part of the forum.
I want to put the Mav on gas. Straight gas. No dual fuel bullshit.
Those out there with any 4.2 nissan or similar truck/engine with gas can you tell me how big a tank you are running, how much range you are getting from it, where you have the tank(s) fitted, If in the stock fuel tank location did you lose or gain clearance under it, power loss/gain, tuning problems, valve problems, bla bla bla, etc etc etc....
I want to get as much info as I can before I start looking at putting a system together.....

I agree as well. Take one look in the 4b traders and almost all of the EFI GQs are dual fuel... I have been perusing these publications of late just trying to form a few plans for when I move back...

Love the GQ / Mav shorties, just have to convince the wife that it's what she NEEDS... I would prefer a shortie diesel but I would probably find a pile of rockinghorse5|-||+ before I found one of those. I would also prefer an auto for the eventual mall crawling it will have to do...

mine is carby old school. I want to know if people keep the stock carb or go gas research/impco or what??? Straight gas through a carb Should be more reliable in off-road situations than EFI, I believe???

I remeber you saying that. A lot of probs in the hills... and getting crap in the carbie.

I am a total |\|3\/\/8|3 when it comes to gas, but can you run gas thru a carbie??? I thought it had to be thru an EFI system.

Gas through a carbie... Fark yeah.Think of all the old HQ taxi's and stuff on gas. My carb is actually really good on hills (for a carb) Main problem is fuel surging around the tank when it is low (big tank) I want gas mainly for the safety issue if upside down and the 45c a litre instead of 95c a litre for Petrol.

The few guys i know with 4.2's on gas are reporting about the same usage as petrol (5km/l). On both carb and efi engines all duel fuel no strait gas.

That is awesome. That is about what I get, 750km out of 147l of petrol. So all I need to do is to be able to fit a gas tank of about the same size. How big is your average gas tank that gets used in a 4x4??

hmmmm.. so I need to try and squeeze 2 of em under there or try and find some different configurations.... I remember a Hilux around here that had about 6 tanks under a false floor in the tray. They weren't much bigger than a SCUBA tank...

Yes they were doing Disco's with 3x30l tanks under a false floor. 90 L tanks are about 1M long and 50cm across.

Don't know whether I can help. I've got a SWB MQ running straight Gas with a 113 litre tank at the rear (Original fuel tank location) with plans to run a second 60l tank midsection.

Ground clearance hasn't been reduced by much cause I've modified the floor to bring the tank into the cabin about 100mm. It's feeding a 308 with a gas carby. Range about 280-320kms depending on my right foot. Offroad performance has improved significantly. No fuel surge, stravation etc, and "economy" far better than the old petrol carby. (Float levels get stuffed around by angles)

Just remember to carry a gas jerry can....

I have looked into it a bit over the last couple weeks and the best solution I have found is to run two composite tanks (these fit into the spare wheel well in holden/ford wagons) inside the truck behind the back seat. This gives about 110 litres of usable gas, which the gas dude calculated with my gearing/tyres etc to give me about 450k range... The best thing with this set-up would be nothing left under the rear of the truck & there is not much wasted space inside.. I already have a false floor in the back their that the tanks would sit under...

ATM I run 1 x 120L tank inside, sitting at the back door, but when I do long 24hr events in Vic I put in another 120L tank in the petrol tank position and also have 2 forklift cradles and fittings that I run inside but take them out after the events as I dont think a Cop would like them to much.
So yes I do have gas jerry cans.
At Xmas I am putting a 60L tank in, I need the space for more important things.

Is the tank you sling underneath a standard d-cell? 423mm diameter? They sit pretty low even if lifted with the body, I think??

Yes the one under does sit low even though I have lifted it as high as I can, thats why I dont run it all the time.

i have 91 gq duel fuel 5sp wagon. has 120 litre tank behind back axle - takes about 100 litres from empty. is impco system through carby. averages about 24/25litres per 100k driven reasonably hard, mostly country. does have roofrack which would have some impact.

Impco is the go apparently. Old proven technology and you can do the forklift bottle/jerry can thing..
