Engine swaps questions

Post by McJeff »

Hey,

After a year and half of unsuccessfuly trying to sell my Patrol, my dad has decided to buy it off me as long it has slower motor (mine has RB30ET).

After short time discussion with him, he sorta of wanting a diesel, I'm thinking of RD28T Since it's small displacment (he's not worrying about how fast it goes bla,bla,bla...), I have few q's they are...

How much does these retails for (s/hand market)?

Should I go for intercooled GU verison?

Is it worth putting these in GQ with 31" tyres with 4.3 gears?

What will i need to complete the conversion from petrol to diesel?

What problems should I look out for?

Would my gearbox mate with 2.8 motor (my motor is 3.0 petrol)?

Are the engine mounts the same between RD28 and RB30?

His use will be daily driving, touring Oz, he has some mods planned which might include B/Bar, Roof racks, d/lights, snorkel, and maybe a winch (depending on b/bar).

Waiting for your responses and I'll discuss it further with my dad and my mechanic friend.

Cheers

Grant

the 2.8 wouldnt be worth much at all, and could be a good choice for him.

Are you going to rebuild the engine, or just throw one in?

How much you been trying to sell yours for?

Hey Bogged,

I'll just throw it in, bit risky I know but will get it checked with my mechanic friend just to be sure.

See my ad in for sale section there's the details in this ad.

Any other things to note if i were to go ahead with the swap?

Cheers

why would u bother?

your dad could prob buy a rd28 powered gq for half what your truck is worth
and u aint gunna sell a rb30et for anymore than a rd28

so unless u rip him off u still wont get the coin you want

Hey,

Firstly, since I couldn't get rid of my GQ without basically giving it away for nothing.

Secondly, my father is in market for a 4x4 and my car suits him except for the engine, I would go all the trouble for him.

Thridly, I know i won't get a cent from doing all this but since the chassis is good why waste by throwing it away and buy other one that will rust faster than my GQ?

Tell me where can you get 2.8l GQ for half what my GQ is worth?

I'll worry about selling the engine part...

Anyone, any real tips for me?

Cheers

hey man
I know the work involved in the conversion as i too did it to mine and got jack all back selling it.
Have you considered just getting a standard exhaust manifold, can give u one for free, a standard ecu ($50) and six nat aspirated injectors(also free), there you go back to standard with the reliability of efi. I have dozens of mates who will pay top dollar for the bits you pull off.
Just a thought. I think fitting the diesel could be a big job as your gearbox has ratios from a sports car (300zx) from memory and RD28's are more like a sherman tank.
cheers brunsy.

Hey,

I know I won't get jack all if I sell the thing, thats why my parents want my GQ and they don't intend to sell it in the future, all they want is slow motor!

I have been thinking about ZD30 since they have 4.3 diff ratio (same as RB30). But as ZD30 is 4 cylinder engine, I will have some problems putting this in GQ. Unless someone here could tell me that the engine mounts are similar or same as 6 cylinder engines.

Now, anyone knows a wrecker that usually have RD28 in stock. Or anyone have working RD28 complete engine with loom, etc...

My parents don't want petrol for their reasons, economy for one reason.

Cheers
