gearbox conversion

Post by nayto »

hey everyone, just asking a question for a mate whose 110 cab chassis's gearbox sh*t itself the other day. He's looking at putting an auto in it, 1 from the discovery would be the easiest conversion i would think. So if anyone has doen this swap before and could shed some light it'd be much appreciated. His is a 97' model TDi. Also rough prices on second hand or reco manual boxes would be great. cheers nayto

97 Tdi was fitted with the R380 box. I have seen good 2nd hand ones sell for anywhere between $500 and $2000.

A couple of people have fitted the ZF auto box from a TDi Discovery. It is a fairly simple conversion and works well. Everything will go smoother if you use a TDi auto, the ZF from the V8 has a different shift pattern - it can be made to work but a diesel ZF would be less hassle.

cheers ISUZUROVER, i was thinking it would be pretty straightfroward. Maybe a bit of trans tunnel modification, and maybe lengthening or shortening driveshafts to suit

Not sure if driveshaft mods are needed. If your friend is interested, I can put him in touch with a mate of mine who did the same mod to his truck a few years ago (he doesn't use the internet so you would have to phone him).

buy a whole damaged 300tdi auto disco from the salvage auctions and use all the parts off one on the defender. I have done it this way and it is simple. You can also part out the rest of the car on ebay or such and make an easy profit. Expect to pay around 2-3k for a smashed disco.

Heres a tip though, when you allign the torque converter with the g/box, make sure it slips all the way into the clutch plates and into the pump gear( the gap between the sandwich plate and the box should be fully closed WITHOUT any force). Because if you do what i did and force it, you will need a new drive gear for the gear pump.
