Muddies or Highway tyres on Fraser Island??
Hey guys, Am going to Fraser Island in OCtrober and was wondering which tyres are better for sand on Fraser. Ive got 33s BFG MTs for off-road and Maxxis H/Ts 31x10.5 for day to day driving.
When ive used the MTs at stockton, my truck seemed to overheat, could possibly have been a slightly blocked radiator, but that was the first time Id driven on sand with the MTs. Didnt have a problem with the A/Ts I had previously.
I know its a mixed opinion on which tyre is best, but will by truck work heaps harder with MTs? should I keep the highways on for the sand, as they dont dig up the sand as much as MTs??
AS Im driving from Sydney, would rather wear out the HTs on the way up and back!
Also, im sure the 33s arent legal on the Hilux in QLD, so might have registration hassles if I pulled over. Anybody heard of this??

This has been done before. some will say boggers are the best, others say HT's.

if your hilux is legally registered in your home state with 33" muddies you can drive them in QLD, but not register it here. However your H/T 31" tyres deflated will be fine for frazer. I regularly go to frazer & tyre pressure is everything, depending on the rain levels ( there has been a lot) Indian head will be the only problem area (15psi will see you fine) 20-25psi on the rest of the island in the lux. cross Island tracks are the next softest, most of the beaches being pretty hard (except entry, exit points)

obviously the 33's will give u more clearence, but usually there isn't much deep sand there, bar around indian head (and north of here), if you deflate the 33's to around 16/18/ 20psi u will have no dramas, but for a long drive take the H/T's and not wear out the muddies, travel at low tide around 'soft spots' and u wont have any prob's, usually a 1000 tour buses there anyway if u have a prob. (just watch out some times they pretend they don't c u)

If you're bogged, the tour busses won't help, they seem to think they rule the roost. If you're on fire and I mean combusting, they may stop, or if you've flipped they may stop. I've personally seen a tour bus run a cruiser into deep water over rocks at a creek crossing which caused 2 unbeaded tyres. Bus just kept goin. You won't need ground clearance, just lower tyre pressure.

I'd definately use the muddies. They give you more drive than the HT and will push you through the soft spots like Ngarla etc. I've been up there on HT's, MTR's and simex JT2's. Without a doubt the Simexs were the best, followed by the MTR's and then the HT's.

tyre size and type is less important than pressure, that's the main one. We had cheescutters on the Diahatsu, hilux and 60 series and got to see the whole island ( Over a 20 period). Fraser was a challange before they put any of the planking down. The track above the champagne pools was one that you learnt to grip the seat with your bum cheeks. I have the same MTs on the 45 series as you have and no problems. Weather plays a big part in in the overall scheme of things as does the tide. The drier it gets the fluffier the sand. Have fun.

Well i have used cheese cutters, H/Ts and BFG M/Ts on Double Island which is next door to Fraser.
The cheesies just dug in, sucked big time in the really soft stuff.
The BFG and H/Ts definately went better, me thinks because of the bigger foot print.
H/Ts performed the best as they did not have big lugs to rip into the sand like the M/Ts but i would use either of them again.
Tyre pressures are the key to get right
Also your driving ability plays a big part i think.
My $0.02 from my experiences

thanks for all the advice guys. My MTS made my truck work harder on Stockton, so I figured theyd chunk up the sand at Fraser as well.
Going the HTs, will save the MTs from the 2000kms slog up and down the highway as well!

I always go the mud tyres they always bight in and get you through the soft spots .We towed out and drove past many a all terain tyre last trip .We will also be there in october this year . www.coffs4wdclub.com .When are you leaving ,you might be able to travel with our group.Theres safety in numbers,we can tow each other.
I'll be up october long weekend, probably leave Sydney the Friday EARLY so as to miss the traffic, havent finalised the departure yet.
