Replacement of piston rings

ok i've completely f*#ked up while rebuilding my diesel patrol motor and ive snapped one of my brand new compression rings (don't ask how, i'm just so comletely embarrased for doing it). Thing is the ring set is $270 bucks (fancy rings).
Does anyone know of or are able to help with sourcing a single ring? surely there must be someone out there thats as stupid as me and has broken or damaged a single piston ring before.......maybe.......

But if i cant get one i might have to try and run one of the old rings, it aitn gonna be perfect but it may be my only choice......

Go to Repco or supercheap or Auto one and buy yourself a piston ring extractor/installer tool. Cheaper tham the price of a ring .....practice taking some old rings off and on a piston till ya get it rite. afraid it will be a botch up job using an old ring....plus yu could run the real risk of it breaking in the short term. You could try an engine reconditioning place to see if they have any loose ones, or can get em.....but it looks like buying a new set of rings for one piston methinks.

yeah what i did was stupider than just snapping the ring while fitting it up to the piston.... gonna call my engnie guy tomorrow and see if theres anything they can do for me but i really dont think i could bring myself to pay another 270 dollars for one lousy ring.

Is $270 for one piston or for all 6???

Some places sell invividual piston sets, so that may be the go.

well the other choice is to do it right, buy another kit. Why go to all this effort to rebuild your engine, then bodge it up with an old ring?

thats got to shit ya mate, I reckon you should be able to get a single ring at a price, if nothing elso the supplier may have a kit that has being broken open and bits lost, that maybe able to sell you 1 of in this case

yeah i've spoken to my engine guy today and he said he would try and source one for me, didn't seem too stressed about it either so it may be fairly easy.

I was only gonna use an old ring as a last resort and it just seemed a little over the top to spend 270 bucks and just use one ring out of a set don't you think? only doing it cause the engines out of the car, not for any actual problem with them. replaced the main bearings, not a hint of wear but did em anyway

I just had a dig through our shed cause we done something very similar $6 for a ring installing/removing tool. but I cant find em at all!!

how serious is the rebuild? have you taken the block in to get honed, decked and pressure checked? as with the head?

and last one... make sure you put the bearings in the right way around!

Yeah it wasn't a serious rebuild, just a quick freshen up. Just honed the bore with a flexi hone. Got the head reconditioned and had to replace all the precombustion chambers because they were cracked.

buy the kit of 6. Use one, sell the other 5 individually on ebay for a starting bid of $50 . There's bound to be others around australia with the same problem.

yes you do have a bit of a point but to me that still seems like a bit of a gamble that people are gonna be as stupid as me .........

could definatly make my money back on it thou!
