Helicoils

Post by F'n_Rover »

I'm making a gearbox to transfer case adapter out of alloy.

Is it worth getting the case mounting studs helicoiled? If so how much does this usually cost?

The studs will be screwed into the adapter around 3/4 of an inch, but they are only 3/8 thick. Any thoughts.

Thanks
Simon

if the plates 3/4" thick i wouldn't bother with 3/8" bolts.
Rule of thumb 1 1/2 times diameter for ally? or 2 times either way you got tons of thread engagement

Stick to coase threads and should be fine, i always helicoil if its a part that will be regulary unbolted to prevent thread wear.

if you have access to a lathe would to get some m16 all thread and tap the size thread in it then tap your ali plate m16 and thread in with lok tight. i this to me dellow houseing where the slave cylinder is.
its a bit more work but cheaper than $96 for helicoils.

if you want i could help out with this. pm me and we can work some thing out.

or you could use keyinserts? they are solid unlike helicoils and have four little pins you smack in after installing and they work like scotch keying.
