Today, I got 3 calls for diesel gas installations, and 1 for V8 disco!!
This is out of control! When will I get any work done?? When will I get any sleep???
Usually I get about 1 a month.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is diesel covered in the rabate? Howard only referred to petrol engine conversions in Parliament yesterday?? :?:

I dont believe it will be covered as its not going to do anything to help reduce petrol usage. I cant see the point in adding another fuel system to an already efficient engine.

Diesels are actually quite inefficient, in terms in how much of the fuel actually combusts. Adding gas injection to a diesel allows the diesel to burn more completely, allowing for cleaner engine oil, and better power and economy.

Re whether its covered under this rebate..... I will be following this with interest, to see if it makes it worthwhile doing to my parents Td5 disco....

Overall though, I'd be pretty happy to put money down on the cost of gas in the city being over 90c a litre within 12 months. And wouldn't be surprised to see 70+c a litre by the end of the year. Good racket for my mate though, his workshop deals in conversions - the boss just put on double the staff, my mate is now installing tanks in the carpark out the front.

Maybe so, but the cost of this conversion and the complexities of setting it up properly and it becomes pointless unless you are powering a bus or truck, plus diesels use a fraction of fuel compared to petrol or lpg/ dual fuel vehicles. On AULRO they quoted costs of $4k and over for a conversion with no way of recouping in fuel savings. Cost of lpg and diesel vehicle may be the same but as soon as you leave the city, bye bye lpg.

I have the same fears RR but people are touting $2/L for petrol/diesel in the very near future. we're being screwed either way.

I think it was John Howard on the radio today pushing for each state to match the rebate offered by the federal government - or at least contribute $1000 to the conversion.
If I could get $3000 to convert the 4.0 then I'd definatelyconsider it.

Although $3000 towards a supercharger would be a better deal (hmmm - any shonky workshops out there want to do me a deal?)

But about from the installation costs, apparently there are ongoing certification costs? I've no idea, just saw one guy paid $440 to have his LPG tanks checked.

The key is the plural - tanks

last time I had mine done it was $220 inc - I think that is where the $440 came from - I am guessing his tanks were two 33L gas capacity ones for a replacment of the fuel tanks on a disco or rangie

with range being so hard to come by when you burn 20 ltrs per hundred, and only 70 ltrs of gas when replacing the fuel tank, what is the smallest diameter gas tank that you can get with a thought of running them along the chasis rails?

Unless you have quite a bit over 2 inch bodylift, you will struggle to find a gas tank small enough to fit under the sills, and get compliance approval - I have an HSE air reservoir mounted on mine in that position, (2inch bodylift), and it hangs down about 5mm below the chassis rails, while being hard up on the floor.

If you want range, have gas tanks under the rear and petrol sill tanks along the side? I have a pair of sill tanks I picked up quite cheap, and I'm thinking about running them (lifted to match body, of course!), with underfloor gas tanks - will give me at least 60litres of petrol, and 70 of gas (conservative estimate). Which works out to be around 650km, at 20L/100. I believe my sill tanks are a little smaller than normal, too.

And being able to carry a reasonable amount of petrol is always useful if you are planning to head out a ways in the country, where gas isn't always available.

valid comments - I have a couple of petrol sill tanks sitting at home which were modified for the same body lift on my last rover, which I was considering fitting. I was after clarification of gas tank options before going to the trouble of fitting them. Sounds like gas tanks wont work for me as they will hang down to much.

you can lift the underfloor tanks very easily - I examined a cradle this evening to satisfy myself it would work, and by shortening the 3 legs that the cradle uses to mount up to the chassis (matter of a hacksaw, a pair of decent pliers and a drill to redo the bolt holes, you can easily lift the twin tanks up 2 inches to match the body lift.

I see you are located in Melbourne - if you go see Regent Street Motors and Gas Conversions in Oakleigh, and ask to speak to Adam, he will know exactly how to do it, as I've been discussing it with him.

i've been quoted $3500 for diesel fumigation, the shop said that he'd done plenty of 4BD1's in trucks over the years and you get a definite 30% increase in power and economy. the lpg runs at a ratio of 30% to diesel and can be switched on nd off t leisure, if only i had a spare $3.5k and somewhere to put a tank on a 90!!
