Hello Suzuki land,

After a long look at a new project I feel the best bet might be for a Jimny. This would be a commuter (25km round trip) with the view to still be able to go on day trips on the out skirts of Sydney.

Here are the benefits I can see

Pros:
Price - good examples for less than $9k
Age - i'm a bit over repairing rust
Size - my garage is not huge
Mods - relatively cheaper compaired to larger 4x4s
Servicing - simple

However these seem to concern me

Cons:
Range - only a 40L tank
Economy - obvious mods + i'm unable to find an owner able to get factory fuel figures.

Those that know these vehicles best, what are your thoughts? BTW I'm leaning more towards the DOHC without VVT vintage. Reasons being DOHC produces more power than OHC model and doesn't require PULP like the VVT. …Also leaning towards JX spec.

Mods - What kind are you looking at? Lockers gears 37's and all that or minor mods.

another pro is efi over the sierras

Can be a big difference to $$ for modding.

I was thinking front bar, winch, 2"lift, 29's & rear locker

Sounds good, Jimny looks to be good for what u want, Look at Squiks one for ideas also.

Transfer gears are also available easy but you will have to change the transfer to a earlier case i believe.

my jimny gets at least 450kms to 37 litres of fuel ,everything stock 99 g13bb single cam 16valve

from what I have been able to find out the m13a is also more reliable long term than the g13bb.....

M13A much nicer engine - rev limiter cuts in at 7500.
Drive old engine and new back to back and you won't want the g13.

What I have found:

'98-(Aug)'00
G13BB (SOHC)
RON 91
59kW @ 6000rpm
104Nm @ 4500rpm

(Sep)'00-(Jan)'05
M13A (DOHC)
RON 91
60kW @ 5500rpm
110Nm @ 4100rpm-4500rpm

(Feb)'05-
M13A (DOHC VVT)
RON 95
62.5kW @ 6000rpm
110Nm @ 4100rpm-4500rpm

I don't want the extra cost of premium for an increase of 2.5kw and no change in torque from the VVT. In addition to this the Feb’05 onwards has moved to a push button activation for the transfer case. This hasn't been proven to me whereas I’m yet to find an issue with the separate lever on any forum. In short I feel far more comfortable with the older technology. ;)

Anymore opinions on the topic are welcome.

I believe the february of model transfer ratio is about 3:1 in low compared to about 2:1 the earlier models. which would be very exelent gearing for the tyre size that your thinking about. hopefully someone else can confirm/counter this.

As I understand it the earlier Jimny (pre VVT) has a high of 1.320 and a low of 2.145 with diff ratios of 3.90 (manual) and 4.09 (auto) although there have been tales of different ratios being found and the VVT manual has a high of 1.000 and a low of 2.643 with a diff ratio of 4.30 and the auto gets a high of 1.320 and a low of 2.643 with a diff ratio of 4.09

:shock: 450?? im lucky to get 350km's out of a full tank! 29's, dohc engine, on pulp.

i think there was a guy on jimnyworld who had a pre vvt, crashed it and bought a vvt jimny. he said the engine braking was way better

the cheapes and easyes transfer reduction is the trialjimny gears.

got mine for $1100 on my door step, this will give you a reduction of 23% in high and low (works on the chain)

best cheap mod i've done

i've also fitted the APIO gears as well for an extra 53% reduction in low, but these are real expencive, and harder to fit.

on the plus side, no mods to fit them and the car looks stock.

Crawl ratios as follows:

Separate lever transfer
’05 - 30.4 (M)
’05 - 26.0 (A)

Push button transfer
’06 - 38.1 (M)
’06 - 31.1 (A)

My old MQ :lol:
’80 - 36.8 (4spd M)

I’m only considering a manual however threw the autos in for a bit of comparison. 31” would be the desired tyre size. What options are available to bring the crawl ratio to an acceptable range with this rubber? i.e. >40.

P.s. Been through the bible, however not sure how much information is interchangeable between Sierra and Jimny.

my 04 model manual jimny jlx has 4.10 diff gears from the factory

My 04' is getting about 440km to the tank through the Adelaide hills to town doing the same milage that you are MQ080. I only have 215's fitted at the moment and personally wouldn't bother going any bigger unless you are prepared to re-gear the Jimny. I have seen a bloke's jimny in Britain that has swapped to Vitara diffs to offset the stress on the clutch with 31's fitted. Could be a cheaper alternative than regearing the transfer.

Depending on how far you want to go with it, it is possible to make a sierra transfer case fit into a jimny, this then opens up all the sierra t-case options. Squik has a sierra t-case i think, sure someone else will be able to give ya a rundown of the swap.

theres a few guys with sierra t-cases in their jimneys. i will be doing the conversion 2 mine shortly.
I am going 2 make the mounts for the case myself. and have new tailshafts made 2 suit. i am told it can be done by shortening the jack shaft and putting spacers in the front and rear shafts
a gear with 25? teeth must be made as a pickup for the speedo drive. and placed between the rear drive of the t-case and the rear shaft
