tb42 exhaust and extractors

Post by mudmav »

hey guys just for anyone that is interested.
I have been researching an exhuast and extractors for my tb42 shorty for a while now. Their was a general consensus that it was a worthwhile mod, however i did find a few posts were people said that it was a waste of money and would only provide more noise.

Well here is the verdict for real.
I had a bit of a traffic light race with a mate of mine before the exhaust went on he has a gu turbo deisel with after market turbo 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust and 3 grand of fuel pump and injector work.
He beat me to 100 k's by about 5 or six car lengths maybe more!!!

anyway lined up last night at the lights with him again and changing at 4200 every gear i beat him to 100 by about 1.5 car lenghts the first and second time we tried and then he beat me third time by about half a car when my clutch started slipping and i missed my launch.

Overall the car holds gear and speed better up hills sounds heaps better and has a noticable difference in power. system is as follows.

pacemaker extractors, 2.5inch press bend exhaust with 1 reverse flow muffler. (didnt go straight through muffler as after a lot of research i was advised that unless i was going to have the thing on the limit ie 4000 revs plus all the time that i would loose to much bottom end torque. as the tb's like a little bit of back pressure. Oh and as for loosing bottom end i didnt at all if anything it pulls better from lower in the rev range than it ever has.

so overall extremly happy!!!!!

Oh and my mate with the gu is spewing that i beat him i think, because all its cost me is the exhuast and electronic ignition and extended rotor button. so all in all its cost me 1000 bucks.

Know im hanging for some 4.6 ratios as im running 35's on the road as well as on the weekend's, with the ratios ill be really happy i think.

any questions dont hesitate, oh or tell me im wrong and that exhuast makes no difference and all that jazz. All i can say is bring on the next red light

Good on ya mate :D

I have extractors and a 2.5inch setup in my SWB GQ TB42.
After I had it put in I noticed a difference straight away.
Way less hesitation when aclerating hard and it could
get over 4500rpm smoothly and quickly when before it was not worth the effort. I must say I do like the exhaust note as a result ;)

I'm interested in your electronic igniton and extended rotor button as that is my next investment. I've only started looking into it so if you could give me info on your I'd appreciate it.

you dont need one but it helps smooth the idle out a little bit and frees up a few more revs in the top end. For the 35 dollars it stings you its worth replacing.

This info is good to know. Extractors and exhaust has been on the cards for my car since I got it a few weeks ago, but was going to have to wait a while. The first week I owned it though, I took it off road for a bit of a bash and got it hung up on the muffler. When I got underneath it the next week to put the 6" lift in it, I realised I smashed my muffler in. This could explain the sudden lack of power I felt after I put the lift in. I mean even my rb30 powered gq goes harder than the tb42 at the moment. Anyway, long story short, I've gotta bite the bullet, this week is rego, next week comes the extractors and exhaust. Gotta find a good exuse to tell the missus or I'm a dead man

I think it would. I think the key is find a reputable exhaust place, not just a place whose main aim is to fit the biggest, loudest, stupidest dump pipe it can possibly find.

exhaust system

Post by joe crothers »

I recently bought a reco tb42 with only 5000ks on it, it had some head work shaved and the ports polished, a torquey cam, balanced and blue printed. It also come with a heavy duty clutch and extractors for $1200
Just got it in and had a 2 1/2 inch system put on. Run it on gas and petrol
It pulls bloody well all the way to 5 grand no problem and sounds shite hot.

Mudmav, who said the Ignitor II isn't good for the TB and why? I got the importers first one in and I ended up returning it a month later after I paid Performance Ignition Services to test it, as it was running crap, and tell me it was stuffed. Importer wanted to have it reinstalled and tested by a sparky they are now using, but it's my work vehicle and didn't have time. I've now gone Crane. Works fine.

i have read a few horror story posts on the ignitor 2 and the fact that it had playe dup in tb's. Even if these posts were heresay i know for a fac tthat the ignitor 2 is designed for use in high performance setups were their are lots of revs involved and lets just come out and say it the tb's hardly a high performance motor nor does it rev a whole heap. So anyway i think more to the point why would you spend the extra money on an ignitor 2 when the series one does a great job anyway.

Yes.
i put pacemakers and a 2.5 system on my 4.5 GU and it made a huge difference to mid range and top end power also fitted a uni-filter "better air in, better gas out"

Speak to Rod at Unique Exhuasts in Barry st Bayswater, He does heaps of systems on Patrols

Well the time has finally come to replace my more or less rooted exhaust on the TB42. It had leaks everywhere especially on the cast ex-manifold and ran like a dog.

Went for headers and 2.5 inch system with flex pipe.

I must say, Im one of those that doesnt like wasting money on useless stuff.

Verdict is it DOES have smoother response accelerating and has less of that compression breaking feel it use to have when you let go of the gas.

Mine sounds good but mild and I like it that way (Im not into the "look at me Im fuly sik" thing). Its still fairly quite inside the cabin with a nice deeper note outside.

So if you have a grand to spend on a rooted exhaust, well why not.

Well I finally got around to doing my exhaust yesterday. I got 2.5" system from the manifold back, more or less cause the original exhaust was stuffed, and I could'nt afford to replace the manifold just yet. I must say I was impressed. I've had heaps of cars over my driving career and had heaps of exhaust systems fitted, but the old 4.2 litre Patrol is the only one I can honestly say that the exhaust has made a noticeable differance on. As already mentioned mid range and top end is where I feel the major improvement. Goes like the powers of piss now. I'll now have to pay the rest of my bills first and then beg, plead, (or not tell) the wife for permission for a set of extractors.
