How much slop in CV is OK??
I pulled my 80 series (97 GXL) diffs apart to fit my lockers today.
I noticed that on the long axel, if I grab the CV and the axel and twist, there is about 1 - 2mm play side to side (or twist) in the CV. It dosent make any noises or click when driving.
Is this OK or just about to go pop?? If so I will most likey replace it whilst the diffs are apart.
Thanks,
Alec

My god I had to read that twice....Surfin Alec wrote:Nah, the play is in the balls and the cages. The Spline is solid on the axel to the inner cage.
So, I might be buying some CV's tomorrow.

Would be worth having a look at the new one and getting an idea of what is "normal" play, before you part with the $$$. If you can afford two joints it may be worthwhile doing your longside and shortside together. Usually if one joint has enough play in it it can cause hammering and damage to the other side. Replace both and keep the others as spares.
George Carlin, an American Comedian said; "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise that half of them are stupider than that".
Have just fitted new CV`s.There ain`t no play at all in new ones.Your old ones are ...well ...CACTUS MATE I could lift/locate the long axle back into the diff by the stub axle with only a minor bit of movemnet in the CV.
There is a shop on EBay that is in WA and does a very good price on cv`s 4WDParts is the name.
Cheers

Well I wacked in some new CV's today. I had a choise of Chineese ones for either $65, $95 or $110, or some Japeneese ones for $180 each. The ones Don Kyatt sell.
I bought the Jap ones and dont they look the part
. I am convinced that the ones I pulled out are the Chineese ones as they look very roughly built. Heaps of slop in the balls and the ball races, poor machining and heat spots all over them from the manufacturing process.
Just if anyone wants to know, they are chalk and cheese. Dont be a Jew, get the Jap ones.
Also had to use a speedy sleve on one of the axels as I had a groove where the axel seal runs, and was causing my diff oil to leak into the CV. Never used one before, dam good invention, but $40 for a round bit of tin.

yeah good choice getting the Jap ones. Don't think the Chinese are quite up to Jap or Aus engineering/metallurgy techno just yet.
Speedy sleeves are ridiculous prices, never ceases to amaxe me why they have'nt come down in price over the years..... but they work!
