TD42 ticking noise
TD42 ticking noise
hello all,
Ive had a sort of ticking noise in my GQ since i got it about 2 months ago. It only pops up when the cars just cruising with a little tiny bit of throttle on. Particulary in 3rd gear at about 40ks and 4th at about 60-65ks with some very gentle throttle. But other than that it's non existant. Is it something to be worried about or is it just a normal diesel clankaty clank noise? (never owned a diesle before)
Oh and it's got 317k on the clock.

It sounds like a diesle noise from the basic description.
Maybe try some nulon in the next oil change, mine is always a bit noisier coming up to changes, since I started using Nulon and giving it a good flush as well is has been excellent.
Or, how long since the oil in the gear box and transfer has been changed?

hey woop, I had my tappets done and there is still a ticking noise when i let of the throttle and more prenounceed at certain revs, doee this sound like worn valve rockers. I was told by one mechanic that it was my lifters and he quoted me $600 to fix them. Do lifters often need replacing in gq or is it most probaly worn valve rockers?
This does sound like worn valve rockers, or worn pads. If the pads on the rockers are worn, trying to adjust them with a feeler gauge is very difficult to almost impossible as its very hard to get the right 'feel' on the feeler gauge. I found the only way i could adjust mine properly before the re-build was with a dial gauge.
For some reason, the inlet rockers are relatively cheap
, at around $40 each,but the exhausts are very expensive--$100 is per rocker 
When i rebuilt my TD42 last year, i also had to replace the rocker shaft as well.

To replace the lifters, you need to remove cylinder head. My TD42 had 550,000Km's when i rebuilt it, and i could have easily re-used the original lifters--i doubt it will be lifters. Take the rocker cover off, and check the valve rocker arms. Grab them at the pushrod end and the valve side and push one side foward, while trying to pull the other back and see if you can get any movement. You can replace them individually--maybe not all need replacing--only 2 of mine had slight movement--rocker shaft did have some bad scoring though, and some pads were badly worn.
