I'd have to say that at times shudder is a gross understatement.
It feels like I'm driving over a very badly corrugated dirt road. It's not constant, I travel the same roads to work every day and it happens in pretty much the same places each day. It gets worse when I decelerate, till I get to around 80KPH. In saying that If I've got the foot on the gas the vehicle definately behaves better. Bear in mind It's definatly nothing to do with the brakes.

Now that you've read that...let me give you some history. I've had the vehicle for a couple of years now.
Last foray into the bush saw me do considerable damage....pretzeled a track rod and came pretty close to leaving the old girl where she stood!! Anywhooo Got (sorry DROVE) her home and inspected the damage. Got it all sorted..but on one hill it seems I lost the axle dampner I THINK THIS IS MY PROBLEM. I still need a proper wheel alignment but have gotten things pretty damn straight myself ( I'd back my abilities anywhere). Now I know I need a REAL wheel alignment, but thie problem really hasn't gotten any better with any adjustment either way.
Now am I right in deducing that the missing axle dampner is the problem, or is there something more serious going on.
Could it be a bent axle housing??????

mine used to shudder at around 80 to 110 and above but i found out that it was just a wheel balance and all my problems went away.

maybe start with the items that dont cost a lot to have fixed first.

I thought the same thing, and am in the process of gett 31 10.5 15's so within the next couple of weeks will have newt tyres and a wheel alignment, I'm just little worried it's more than that especially missing a big hunk of an all steel from an' all the front end........
Any one know how much one those buggers would weigh????

Have you checked you panhard bushes?

Definately woth a look, she's getting to that age. I reckon it's time for a good suspension and steering update.
Got a nice squeek coming from the back end.

Check the rear sway bar links for the squeak, they are just like steering ball joints and are non greasable.

Steering shudder also can come from flogged out radius arm to front diff bushes.

I would also fit a damper again, some vehicles can't do without them, some can. Don't forget not all Landies are assembled the same way, I've measured the left and right wheelbases on a disco and they have been 17mm difference! From the factory.

ive found now after 3 different times on a few different cars that it been the castor bushes flogged out,

Not yet, Haven't had a chance to even look at her since posting. :roll:

I'm inclijned to think it's wheel alignment as the problems a new one.
Got a steering dampner coming in the mail any day.

replacing the bushes in your panhard and trailing arms would be the first thing on my list. it almost defintely sounds like a castor issue so also check your radius arms arnt bent!

then if you drove the car hard enough to do this damage... your swivel hubs might be worth a look

I felt that the shudder was too much to be hidden by the dampner, I want to do all the bushes anyway so I'll get to that at some stage. I just hope I can do it when I'm ready, not when the disco tells me to :roll:
