SIERRA T/CASE QUESTIONS
Is the t/case in a sierra 1to1 ratio in high range and would it be strong enough in a LWB vitara as a dual t/case? Im just exploring my options i know i can buy trany gears and i think you can buy them so they reduce high range final ratio as well so you can run bigger wheels on hwy as well as bush .This is what i am after so the sierra t/case if reduces ratio in high range would suit me then is it strong enough ?
According to the Rockhopper site: Sierra 1.3L x-fer high range ratio is 1.454:1.

I think a more proven approach is to put lower diff gears in the car when you do your tyres - that will make your gearing lower regardless of high/low ratio driving.
Then once you've done that - I guess the next thing to do is get a rockhopper for the x-fer case.
Sorry - not sure about strengths etc - although, i have seen Sierra's with a sierra x-fer case behind a vitara x-fercase and vitara 1.6EFI engine - so i guess that would suggest that they are strong enough to do the job.

p.s. if you had the twin cases going with your overall reduction in both cases = 1 (vitara case) x 1.454 (sierra case) you would in theory have the correct gearing to run a tyre that is 37.8" tall (assuming vitara stock tyres are 26" like a sierra) - i'm not sure that would be very easy to fit though.
i.e. i expect that if you fit twin cases, you are going to need to drive the engine must faster to get the car to travel at the same speeds.
What size tyre are you trying to fit? You could pretty easily work out what you want your high range overall ratio to be once you know what tyre size you are aiming for.

however, they don't like 5000rpm clutch dumps, but what transfer case would?

diff gears will give you a reduction back to or lower than stock in both hi and low range. which is good if that's all you want to do after putting bigger tyres.
transfer gears can do the same but also give you a lower low range ratio which is good if you want to go slower off road.
combine the two and look out for the smile from ear to ear that you will get.

Not that many diff gears avalaible for a car that deending on model had 4.8's (I think) or 5.13's .. the only real lower diff ratios are 5.83 with a pinion gear that looks more like a grinding bur..
The idea of the sierra T\case in a vit has been done before and there are some good pics on a british web site of it .. ( I am sure Suzuki Viagra recalls the site .. I cant at the moment) ..

The problem with that is that the High is way too low unless you go to 33"s if you use a sierra transfer case on a vitara, and that the rockhopper on a Vitara doesnt reduce high so it's too high. This is one of the reasons why I didn't intend to buy a rockhopper - it doesnt do as much good on a Vitara as it does on a sierra, due to the passthrough high. It's just the way Vitara transfercases are......
Unlike sierras there is no better 4wd we can scab bits off, cos we all know Vitaras are the highest form of 4wd life on the planet......
You can do the Ring and Pinion gear 5.83 from Calmini which isn't low enough though if you had 5.12 diffs to start with and is also likely to grenade when the front axle goes.
So - the options are:
1) Go back from 5.12 to 4.6 diffs and do a Sierra transfer case swap - Antt you wanna swap diff centres to compensate for those 30's?
2) do the transfer case swap and an SAS swap and use Sierra widetrack front diff with 5.12 Vitara geariung and put 33"s on to fix the gearing
3) Double transfer case it using one of the Vitara undercrawler kits......
note using a Sierra transfer case as the double case causes problems with gearing - there are Vitara undercrawler kits but they about $3000....

i have 32 inch tyres and have in mind later on a max of mabey 34 inch its a 92 vitara 1.6efi with standard 5.12 ratio diffs already so ratios arnt realy going to be much of an option i understand trany gears are there if i want them my other car already has them sorry its a land cruiser i just want to explor all my other options first .So what you are all saying is if i was to fit a sierra t/case as well as my standard drive train with both t/cases in high range it would be to low geared for hwy use is that right ?The contact you gave me for the person that has already done this is he going to mind if i contact him?

Whoops to used to .au I spose.... yeah it's a uk site.
The 5.12 is about 12% higher so we both win.
I wouldnt consider doing 2 more diff centres from a wrecker and the tarnsfer case swap it just isnt worth it - better to pay for a hopper in that case, or Calmini R&P.

They're gonna be 27% taller than your standard EFI gearing - not the 13.8% the site says as you should have the 4.6 gearset ont your EFI LWB, not the 5.12.
You've only gone up 15% in wheel diameter - so you have the options of 5.12 (eg Standrad Carby SWB gearing (up 11%) or Calmini 5.83 (up 27%).
The calmini set is probably way too much on a daily driver on a 30" wheel.
The jump from 30" hankooks on 7" rims and 31" BFG's on 8" rims was huge and I wasn't expecting the difference to be so big. The carby Vit coped fine with the 30"s but all sorts of additional strain showed up with the 31"s or I wouldnt even be looking. I actually prefered High range gearing on the 30"s (but still lower low woulda been nice).
The vitara (on 5.12 diffs) coped so well with the 30"s..... but 31"s is a whole new ball game. God those BFG's are heavy - no wonder i ditched the 30" FBG's so quick.

Two transfer cases in a row - for instance a marlin crawler, but there's a few brands around.
Snake racing sell the Marlin Crawlers here in Aus - dunno who else does.

I am going to covert the hilux t/case into a devorced one for my dual t/case in my vitara i am now looking for an early hilux t/case i am chaseing one with a removable pto cover plate if any one knows of one please pm me
