What turbo can be fitted to a 3B Diesel, no kits thanks.
How hard is it to fit one on and what positives and negatives might there be???

What Turbo for 3B Diesel
Moderators: toaddog, Elmo, DUDELUX
Im also in the process of turbocharging my B diesel in my 40 atm.
A turbo that has approx. .48 a/r compressor and .42 a/r turbine ratios off a 1.8-2.3 petrol motor is generally what people use for B/2B/3B motors.
Possibly Garrett T25, T28 or T3 ( apparently T3's off certain volvos have those exact numbers above and are cheap too ). Im probably going to go with a MHI (mitsu) TD04 off a WRX as they are about the right size needed and IIRC they have been used before on 3B's. They can be found for $200.
You will also need a manifold/dump pipe, oil lines, water lines may or may not be needed depending on turbo, re-routing of intake plumbing and exhaust, and make sure your motor and injector pump is ok first.
Optional is intercooler front/top/air-water/whatever, boost controller, boost and pyro gauge (recomended) etc.
Negatives are obviously more things to go wrong/f*** up, boost on a motor that is not healthy/bad compression will generally make things worse quicker, playing with boost/fueling on a diesel without knowing exactly what your doing can be BAD re: one melted motor.
Positives are MORE POWER (not that you ever here '3B' and 'power' in the same sentence without 'serious lack of' first) and ALOT of useable torque. If its your daily driver or you ever tow anything its just about the best thing you can do to your truck. Also possibly more economy depending on how you drive it.
Kits can be had for $2k+ but if you do it yourself you can have a better setup plus extras for a whole lot less. So far i have:
top mount intercooler $200
hood scoop $100
boost controller $30
bunch of silicon hoses and various plumbing for $40
I need:
to get a manifold made or make one myself,
looking at a few turbos for around $200-300
get an oil line made for oil feed. The oil return should be taken straight down to the sump.
I'm sure someone on OL with some more experience in turbos and 3B's will post some info on their setups.
oh yeah and it really will be worth the extra $$$ and complexity.
so turbo the slug!

Re: What Turbo for 3B Diesel
a turbo kit is an easy option but if you mechanically minded you shood definately be able to do it cheaper. i bought denco/schwitzer kit from denco in wagga wagga you can order it on line and piss easy to fit ya self and cheap as too i only paid 1750 for mine and you get the inlet manifold and turbo and all the pipe work to bolt it on and set it up the only things you will have to fab up is the air inlet from filter to turbo and the exhaust.... what truck is it on... 40 series of 73 series? here is some more info good luck80gged wrote:What turbo can be fitted to a 3B Diesel, no kits thanks.
