North Queensland Event 6th and 7th September 2003

North Queensland Event 6th and 7th September 2003
We are proud to announce that the 2003 Mudrun is definitely going ahead. As with many motorsport events there have been many dramas with insurance, but this has finally been solved. It does mean that there are quite a number of changes from previous years.
1. First of note you’ll notice that it is now organised by Mudsportz FNQ. This is a non-profit club who are promoting mudracing in the far North.
2. We have affiliated with the Australian 4WD Mudracing Association and will be running under their rules and regulations. A copy of these rules will be either enclosed with this letter, available on request, or viewed at http://www.a4wdmra.com.au
3. Even though it is still a 2 day event only Sunday the 7th will be open to the public. Saturday the 6th will be used for scrutineering and practise runs. At this stage scrutineering will occur between 10:00am and 3:00pm and practice will be between 2:00pm and 5:00pm
4. We will be unable to run any quad bike events as they are not covered under A4WDMRA insurance.
5. The existing mud pits will be incorporated into a longer mud course. Road Registered and modified 4WD Vehicles will race on a specially built track with Jumps, Corners, Water Holes, Straights and Mud Holes. Tracks are constructed to test both the Driver and the Vehicle. Races are timed electronically with points being awarded in each heat. (You won’t have to jump your vehicle if you don’t want to!) This is going to make for VERY EXCITING racing!!!
6. Classes will be as per the A4WDMRA system with the addition of a set of subclasses in registered class. This will make for very close and fair racing at all levels. In the registered subclasses vehicles are classified by actual ability which examines many criteria to accurately put similarly capable vehicles together. In the non-registered classes vehicles are classified by engine capacity. See entry form & rules for more detail.
7. The obstacle course will not be a timed event. The course will be a skill tester and a points system based on successfully negotiating each obstacle will be used to determine the winner.
8. The small circuit track will not be run.
9. In all events the co-driver must be responsible for, and capable of, attaching recovery equipment.
We believe that these changes will make for the most successful mudrun ever and would welcome the input of anyone with ideas for making it better still.
Fortunately we have been successful in securing a naming rights sponsor and in 2003 that sponsor is TJM Megastore. Consequently the event this year will be referred to as “TJM Megastore 2003 Mudrun” presented by Mudsportz FNQ.
There are still other sponsorship packages available, if you know anyone who may be interested please contact Mike or Gordon ASAP as we are finalising TV commercials soon. Packages start for as little as $350.
Volunteers are still needed, these will fill such vital roles as track marshalls and timekeepers etc. Volunteers receive free entry to the event and if there are enough everyone will get a good chance to spectate as well !!!
Competition entry forms will soon be available from:
TJM Megastore Cairns
TJM Megastore Townsville
TJM Megastore Mt Isa
Channel 7 Cairns
Channel 7 Townsville
Mailed directly to Mudsportz FNQ
We look forward to the TJM Megastore 2003 Mudrun presented by Mudsportz FNQ being the most successful mudrun event ever held in the far north and with your help and participation we are sure it will be!!
Anyone on this board wanting more information feel free to contact Mike on 0419 575 440

Update...
over the weekend we put the side by side mud racing circuits and much fun was to be had testing these out late Sunday afternoon.
Basically, each circuit goes out with a series of S-bends with a couple of holes, around a 180 turn, back over a hump (jump if your going fast enough) through a small bog hole, over another hump then a speed appoach to the 50m mud pit!! Total citcuit length for each track around 500m
A few blokes turned up for a play and we started on the obstacle course - much use of snatch staps followed.....
our general concept is for the obstacle course is for it to be skill based rather than speed, getting progressively harder throughout the course.

Update II...
Entry forms have now been distributed to TJM stores in the NQ.
Cairns has plenty, Townsville and Mt Isa will have theirs in the next few days.
We will be working on site most weekends (usually Sun) anyone wanting to come and give a hand will be most welcome!!! There is still a fair bit of work to do on the obstacle course and this is your chance to have some input!!! Of course there is every possibility of "play time" after the work
TV ads are almost finalised and will be hitting TV screens around the Far North this Thurs 14th of August.

Just the racing alone is gonna make it heaps better! side by side circuits - ehxcellent! We should have closer racing too with the new class system...
We haven't done much about prizes as yet, in previous years they've caused more angst than benefit, cos people don't always win what they want/need. We have had initial talks with TJM Australia but nothing definite yet. Trophies have been organised for each class.
There will be food and drink stalls but that's probably about it. This is a "back to basics" event for us and we're concentrating on running an excellent competition and will look at the ancillaries again next year. A month ago we weren't sure we were gonna have any kind of event! Hooly Dooly have things been happenin since then!
camo wrote:can we enter vechicals on the weekend?
did the sums and i should be in class 1a so i would love to have a go!!!
Entries close 29th August.
We need this so we can organise heats, get the timing for the program on the day etc, etc all sorted. One of the cool side effects of the class system we are using is that we will be able to put similarly matched vehicles within each class in heats together.
Have a go Camo!! it will be a hoot!!!

Yes Babinda it is! I'm told there's plenty of bush camping around the creek on the way to the site from Babinda township, (about 3 km outta town) I'll check this out on Sun and report back) ther's is also pub accomodation and a motel in Babinda itself.

UPDATE III
On the weekend we put in some serious work on the Obstacle course. Put in an obstacle I call "the scissor" which was a brain child of my Co-President Gordon. We pushed some vehicles through a few of the obstacles and had a busted rear bumper, some light panel damage, a bent front bumper... cool.
Accomodation
We sourced some contact details of budget accomodation on the southside of Cairns which is probably only 20min or so from the site,
Since it's their busy season they wouldn't do a deal for us but what the hey they're handy.

http://www.cairnsvillageresort.com.au/
I still haven't checked the bush camping situation (we stopped working after dark as it was!)

We're still negotiating this with the property owner (He has some reservations) But hope to have that sorted one way or the other this weekend...

UPDATE IV
Reminder
ENTRIES CLOSE THIS FRIDAY!!
General
Well the tracks are pretty much finished. The obstacle course came together very well, a nice balance of challenging and fun without being dangerous. (my zook had a wheel more than significantly off the ground). The mudracing track is just sensational, it's going to be a real spectacle! very fast, very muddy, very sideways!
Accomodation update
The property owner has decided NOT to allow on-site camping this year but will almost certainly do it next year.
The bush camping at the river nearby turns out to be not so attractive as the river is full of crocs. There is camping the other side of town with some facilities, for more info call Babinda Tourist information (07) 4067 1008
Important Race Info
Co Drivers will not be permitted in vehicle whilst racing. This is an A4WDMRA requirement for insurance reasons (and was a bit of a surprise to us!). Co drivers may act as spotters in Obstacle course.
Dates/Times
Friday 29th August
*Entries Close 5pm
Saturday 6th September (for competitors only)
*Gates open 8:00am
*Scrutineering 10:00am-3:00pm, Vehicles must be on-site and available for this entire period.
*Drivers Briefing 1:45pm
*Practice 2:00pm-5:00pm
Sunday 7th September (public & competitors)
*Gates open 7:30am
*Drivers Briefing 8:00am

We would expect a police presence on the roads after the event.
All competitors must be 0 and the likelihood of random checks is high!

Congratulations JAKE!!
Ruff wasn't too windy had a good weekend Luke (terrafirma) is going to right a little report for you all.
The obs course was pretty good for guys who run from stock to moderately modded vehicles. We have some pices being coalated to suit all tastes (I think).
Bit knacked we marshalled all day. I tell ya what though a 700hp FJ40 can make MUD look so easy.....FAWK it went.
