HJ61 Turbo Diesel...turbo dash lights and battery charge
Hi all,
new here. Quick question, I took my cruiser out for a bit of a bash yesterday, went through plenty of mud and water....cleaned it out real good afterwards including engine bay. It drove home fine last night but now today the 2 turbo lights (green and orange) at the bottom of the tacho remain on and i noticed the battery voltage isnt up as high as usual(it's at around 20 and is normally above 24, i have dual batteries). I was thinking water in the elecs/condensation, but the problem still remains after hours of sitting there.
Any thoughts? P.S..the car drives fine, turbo is still responsive, no rattles or strange sounds, or smoke blowing.

Alternators dont like being subjected to alot of mud or water, and by the sounds of it, ur alternator has either cr@ped itself (something wrong with brushes or regulator), or check all the plugs on the alterator maybe disconnect them and give them a clean/spray with crc. If still no go ide go get the alterator checked by an auto elec.
If im wrong im sure others will correct me.

Do you know if your HJ61 has an external regulator to the alternator?
The HJ60 has one. When my reg started to die, it wouldnt charge very well and the dash lights used to come on randomly....
It could also be the diodes in the back of the alternator. Quite often when they get covered in mud, they will continue to work. After a while however, the mud acts as an insulator, and the diodes are unable to disapate heat properly. When they get really hot, they eventually fail.
This may have happened if you have been driving through a lot of mud.
You may only have 1 good one left, hence the poor charge voltage.

If you want a spare 60 for bits-

Stick a multimeter on the thing whilst running and check your charge rate. That will give you a good place to start.
If ok would be looking for any commonality in the wiring to the dash cluster from the engine bay. Look for a plug in the bay which runs through your firewall.

75 series ute. 8 inch lift, Drop shackles, Shock hoops, ladder bar, Ubolt flip, 3 inch wheel spacers, intercooled turbo, winch, twin detroits, 35" Mtr's, etc, etc.
Honestly wouldn't have a clue, I will have to check. What you said about the mud stopping it from working after a while makes sense though, because like i said, it worked fine last night, so over night something has fouled up. I will definitely have a look though and spray some CRC like has been suggested. Alot of you seem to have had this problem, so is there a solution to prevent it for us 4wdrivers? I mean is there some way to protect the alternator from mud and water?carts wrote:Do you know if your HJ61 has an external regulator to the alternator?

PS - about the orange being for over boost, I believe it is, but like I said it seems to drive as it should, which it wouldn't if it was stuck on full boost, is that correct?
PPS - so you all know, I only bought my baby 3 weeks ago, jeez i do love her
