hi all,
(posting a question for a friend)
my mate is traveling to katherine in a disco that he is looking at. he is after some sugestions on what tyres would be best for the job. he wants to be able to do some 4x4 trips when based there so a tyre that is good for road travel but can hold its owen in the sand etc. thanks for the help.

Disco2 Td5 can run up to 245/75/16, I've had a good run with Cooper St's.
Overall Diameter is about 32", and guard clearance isn't an issue with D2's.

I've had some experience with goodyear wrangler A/T's and found them pretty damn good all round.
If Kmart hadn't stuffed me round, I'd be putting them on my disco now, but that's another story
Anyhow.....the Pirelli Scorpion A/T's got the thumbs up in 4WD monthly for an all rounder, Haven't used them myself.

Really????? I found them to be pretty good. My old man had a set on his series 3 when we lived in Perth. I did up a series 2 whilst living in vic that I put a set of wranglers on. Just bought a set of goodride AT's (because they were cheap) I'll have to wait and see what they turn out to be like yet. Still waiting for a slow assed mother trucker from ebay to send me soma rims

We have run a couple of sets of Goodyear MTR 225/75/16 on a 2003 D2. Great tyre even on wet bitchumen. Will probably be going away from them next time to get a slightly wider tyre with out increasing tyre diatemeter. I would like 235/75/16 or 245/70/16 but Goodyear do not make an MTR in that size.
We have also had problems with the tyres feathering baddly, but I believe this has more to do with bad shocks rather that the tyres as the first set got 50,000 kms without issue, the last sets did not do so well even LR replaced the shocks that are still *(&^*&(^^&$%%%$#

I have just returned from Nhulunbuy - Gove and am now running BFG MTR's 245/75/16's and found them excellent. I had Coopers on the same trip earlier this year and found them absolutely hopeless on wet bitumen. The MTR's are also excellent in the sand. With the TD5 Disco you want to get a CDL of some sort if you get a bit serious.

Admitedly I run at a high pressure on road (40psi), and all they did was understeer.
Still have 2 in near new condition. Couldn't wait to get them off the car.
Going to use them on my trailer.

Cooper STs & Traction Control
Has any body had problems with tearing chunks out of the Cooper ST on a Disco with Traction Control?
I have heard of rumours that the Traction Control on a Disco and the Coopers ST do not do very well together and am trying to find people who may have had the STs on a Disco with Traction Control and used the Disco for what it was built for?
Any help is appreciated?

What do you mean by feathering? I wondering if it is anything like what happened to mine and I also witnessed on a mates Hilux. Made the car unbearable to drive due to terrible vibrations at 100km/h. See my old thread http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... highlight=. When I took them off, one side of each of the lugs was at worn to indicator level, while the other side of the individual lug still had a fair amount of tread left. The rear tyres were fine. I'm now running AT/Rs which seem to hold the bitumen well. The guy I got them from said he preffered them to the BF AT's offroad....but that was just his opinion.

On my Disco 1 (300tdi auto, Mile marker 8000lb elec winch, Dual batts, heaps of gear in the back) I have found the BFG all terrains to be faultless.
The previous owner got rid of the mitchys early on and had 2 sets before putting a 3rd set on to roady it for me and now it has done 275000km and this set is only about 30% after weve done 60%/40% on / off road including rocks and sand in Alice springs to mud in Toolangi, Mt Stirling, Woods point, Bright etc etc.
Most of that either loaded to the hilt with gear including a Hannible roof top tent, or high speed (135kmh) in NT on tar and sand/gravel (up to 110kmh) normal running at 35psi and loaded 40 to 45 psi.
I have found them to be quite ok in the wet on road, as good as any i've ever had only suffering on wet grassy hills on the farm.
Ive got Cooper MTR's on our Jeep that came with it and Im wanting them to wear out as they are hopless in the wet on road and well as noisey as hell at 100 clicks but being coopers they just don't seem to wear out.
Ive had Hankooks, goodyear and bridgstone at tyres on my old triton ( can't remember what type tyres) and I wasn't happy with any of them so I put BFG AT's on that and 4 years later and 2 trips accross to Kalgoorlie, the last it stayed there with my sister and bro inlaw still have the same rubber on it as they asked me just the other day when I put them on, so they are buying a new set now.
They suit me, other mates have had great runs from Muddies but Ive never owned them so I cant say.

Feathering is another problem all together and is normally caused by bad shocks or shocks that are valved or set wrongly.
Feathering is the result of the tyre bouncing and not having full contact with the road all the time.
It can also be caused by out of balance tyres or worn ball joints, swivels or CV joints which can cause a vibe down through the wheels, and is normally more prevalent on the front but if found on the rear of a live axel vehical it is 99% the shocks.
