Hey Guys,
I was just wondering how you drive your diesels? rev wise.
I drive basically between 1500 and 2000rpm. Don't ever go over 2500rpm.
Offroad is a different story anything goes.
I have a non turbo sd33 patrol.
I am I pussy? it just seems to be where i get the most out of the engine.

Keep mine under 3500rpm but i don't heavily gas it; mostly
I watch my EGTs to make sure she is not being overfueld; otherwise i am just forcing dollars out the rear with no gain

seems all deisels have that same rev range and it gets smaller the biger the engine i rev my 4.2 between 1200rpm and 3500 any higher and it revs with no go.
as for the trucks i drive with motors rangine from 4l 4cyl they rev freely to 4500rpm and still have power, to the largest 12l v8 wich only have power between 1000-2500 rev them much higher and it's redlining

I have a 75 series ute 4.2 1hz mostly drive it between 1500 and 2200 when i sit on $1.10 it revs at 2200rpm...
Also depends what cd iam listening too i have taken it to 4000rpm but that was when i first got it and my previous car was a very fast falcon ute but after 3yrs of owning the cruiser i now know how too drive a diesel properly theres no point in reving the shit out of it....
But if someone is up my arse i put my foot down hard so they get covered in black smoke....MY BAD

1500 - 2500 regular daily driving. Cruise on 2grand for best mileage. Take it close to 3000 if i'm trying ti get infront of sum1
Offroad i've taken it to 3500 on very few occasions. One insane muddy hill where it keep dying near the crest , and once at stocko going up a mongrel of a dune, think it went to about 3700 then

I try to rev to 3000rpm just about every gear change and try not to cruise much below 2000rpm. Now and again i'll have a squirt to 3500. In 5th it sits just over 100km/h @ 2100rpm. If i let it lug around town for too long it starts to drive like a pig.

EDIT: Turns out i'm full of shit. I change around 2500-2750rpm most gears, and generally sit at around 1750rpm when 'cruising' around town. On the highway it still sits on 100km'h @ ~2000rpm. In saying that, 3000rpm certainly isn't rare. When the red mist has decended i've hit 3750+rpm (that's pretty well redline)

Supposedly it's because the bores glaze up and compression drops. You might notice that after driving around town for a while (i.e. weeks), a blast down the highway will have your diesel feeling like it's freed up and has a bit more go (because you've been running at high revs + load). I'm not certain that what i experience is due to glazing, but i definately notice i drop in motivation if i don't work it for a while.toy75 wrote:Just curious. My engine seems to make 'good' power and torque all the way up to ~3200rpm.
BTW it's only around 8000km old - i'm just training it

my max torque is at 2000, so i dont need to rev it much, although i have reved it to nearly 5000 a few times on the highway when im in a bit of a hurry.
but around town i usually use it between 2000-3000.

My 4.0litre 60series likes to sit around 2000rpm. If i want to get up to 100kms and hour, its more like 2200 - 2500. Gud fuel economy on about 2000revs, (about 85kmph) and more and it likes to guzzle. I only run 33's.
Around town its like 1500rpm.
The only time it gets above 3000 is low first on a steep hill climb.

I have been wondering about the rev range to, my tdi disco does most things in the 2000- 2500 range with occasional 3000 rpm when taking off uphill, 2250 @100kph.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

I think the best way to get the most economy out of a diesel is to get it up to speed as quick as possible, then keep it in the highest gear practical. Allowing a car to struggle (ie 5th up a hill) will end up using more fuel, so back change, then again, put it in the highest gear practical after the hill.

It seems that a lot of trucks here manage to sit on 100 km/h at between 2000 rpm and 2400. I sit on about 2700 -2800 rpm at 100 km/h. It is an 80 series TD 92 model. when I test drove an auto it was about 2400rpm at 100 km/h any one else getting the same for a manual 80 series?
As for back on topic, I drive with changes between 1800 rpm and 2500, I also let it rev to about 3000 maybe a bit more when up hill

After my pump was rebuilt, was told not to be scared to change gears or charge up hills at 3.7k (hilux 2.4 - 250 thou) however normally change around 3,000 and it see's the odd 3.5k offroad/ or over taking. Sitting at 100 km/hr on factory road grippers its bout 2.8k, on 31 mt/rs its a touch lower, not really noticable. Also gradully increase pedal pressure as acceleration increases.
Dont use a drop of oil between changes (penrite HPR 15), and return about 10l/100km (on BP diesel with chemtech injector cleaner each tank).
Note: people trying to lug up hill in 5th gear, foot flat to the floor and anything lower than 2.5k in a hilux, your running a high risk of blowing 5th gear as it cant take that kind of torque loading.
