60 series transfer case noise...

Post by DanielS »

Hope some guys on the pannel can help.

My brother rang me yesterday saying there is nosie coming from his transfer case on his 12HT 5 speed. This happens when the hubs are engaged, but H4/L4 arent engaged. When he jacket up one of the front wheels and spun it- you can hear a metalic clunk, clunk, clunk coming from the transfer case.

The case has been a little bit nosiy since its rebuild and he pulled out a tree yesterday ( it was small and not that hard ) but it seems to be the straw that broke the camals back.

Any ideas of possible things it could be??

thanks

clunk!

Post by bigcam »

had the smae problem with mine, if hubs are engaged the front tailshaft is spinning and the front bearing (the one behind the diff pinion looking flange on the front of the transfer had a flatspot and dunk, dunk., dunk, dunk, getting faster /slower with road speed, would also do if hubs disengaged and in 4l or 4h (again as the propshaft is spinning)

i managed to get a diasembled transfercase (you have to to get em off) and changed the front plate and thereofre bearing etc.

not that hard to do and have the old one here if you want to get a bearing fitted then changeover saving you time off the road (can have it for free) if you follow the toyota manual dont remove the detent balls/springs and shaft you dont need to (and much easier!)

if its not that then buggered if i know!!!!!!

hope that helps

thanks for that info bigcam, I just wrang my brother and told him about what you have discribed- he said it sound like that. I also told him about the offer of the old bearing and he said thanks but is planning on pulling the whole box out and getting the fly wheel machined and doing the seal on the input sharft into the gear box also.

Thanks for you help and if we have any questions I will drop you a line.

Regards

to diagnose it properly or at least more accurately :? undo the flange from the front prop shaft and in 2wd mode grab the transfer case flange and turn it with pressure on different angles, it turns freely but you could easily feel the flatspot in the bearing on mine. just push the propshaft aside no need to undo from the diff.

also check for any play if the bearing has colapsed the thing will be as floppy as shrowing a hotdog down a hallway.

oh yeah one other thing the toyota manual fails to inform you is that once you remove the front plate of the tranfercase all the gearbox oil comes out too.. it says to drain the x-fer case but doesnt say anything about the box, needles to say was kinda like a scene from the transporter rolling on the floor covered in stinky smelly gear oil.. yay
