Is this something a fairly handy backyarder can take on? I have rebuilt engines, gearboxes, outboards, mowers, other parts, all sorts of stuff over the years although never even seen inside one of these but assume it should be fairly simple
I have given up on the idea of rebuilding my td 4.2 injector pump at home the more I read about it , way too hard but could I do an ac compressor?
cheers fnq

Hi fnq,
What part do you want to rebuild particularly?
IMHO these are definately a throwaway item - around $300 new for a Sanden compressor - not even worth the effort trying to rebuild them.
By far the most common thing that fails is the front shaft seal, technically it's pretty easy to replace, but alot of the time it involves replacing the whole front housing, and sometimes the input shaft / swash plate assembly - too hard / expensive.
Sanden (if it is a Sanden) sell back-end rebuild kits which include new seals / valve plates etc - no big deal to do these - pull it down, throw the new gear in and re-torque the "head" - done.
Rotary, vane and scroll types are a different animal altogether.
Cheers.
If it's worth doing - it's worth doing to excess ...
Thanks spannercrab for the reply, the compressor is from our daily driver which relates here because the missus will very soon refuse to drive it and take the GQ as the shopping trolley and city car got me off by butt when she told me her plan .
Anyway it's a Mazda 929L efi 85 2 door hardtop, had it since virtually new, was still on original gas, worked perfectly right up until it sat for 8 months because the missus had a work car for a while. Pulled the fuse the moment I noticed it not cooling much just a couple of months ago.
Dont have a clue what brand the compressor is, looked but nothing written on it unless underneath.
Do you think just seals and valves will get it up and running? sounds from what you said I could do it, I suspect new hoses etc to suit this new warmer gas also, but any advice welcome on how to approach it.
cheers fnq
