im looking around for a 4runner v6. early to mid 90's model. most of them have between 200-250 000 kms on them. how are the motors after this many k's? what else in particular should i be aware of when inspecting or test driving?

considering buying a 4 runner

They are great trucks and I recomend them... I have had one for 10 years and I love it.

My 94 V6 just clocked 200,000.
It runs sweet still.
A lot of fun, quite capable despite the IFS and as I have found pretty easy to supe up for some more extreme type 4WDing.
No comp vehicle stuff but goes bush pretty well.
Don't get one if you are a particularly big bloke though.

My current 94 V6 was still running great at 200,000kms.....then I put engine management on it and the tuner stuffed it!!! But thats ok, as now I've got the Lexus V8 (same fuel economy, double the power!) 
My prevous 91 Model V6 4runner was still going strong with no dramas at 240,000kms....and then I rolled it and wrote it off.
If it has a decent service history the V6 will still have years of life in it even with those many kms!!

My '93 V6 copped a flogging every day I had it (bout 7 years), blew the head gasket at 170k-ish, but it was one of the recalled ones and hadn't been done.
Overall it was an excellent truck, surprised myself a couple of times with the places it would go, get a good one, keep up the services and you won't regret buying one.

If it has..... Don't worry.
If it hasn’t..... Do worry...... you may have a problem and should get it sorted sooner or later. Other wise buy my engine in 6-12 months (even as a spare)…. You can have it for $3000.00 and it is a great motor.
Other than that, as long as it is serviced you are sweet. I don’t hold back with my car but I look after it very well. If it needs something I just fix it straight away...... and the car has never let me down. A timming belt at 200 (mentioned in another post) is not abnormal I wouldnt think.... they did mine when they fixed the headgasket.
I suprise my Patrol and Rangie mates with how well the car performs.... I love it.... its a great truck.

Guys I spoke to Toyota recall department today 1800 643 242.
The head gasket issue was what they call a "customer satisfaction excercise".
You have to persist as I did until they actually check the history of your vehicle. You will need the VIN number ready to give them.
The head gasket was an issue on 4 Runners within a particular build date
period. Mine fortunately did not get the dodgy gaskets. If it had it is still covered by warranty, maybe it would be better if it had that way I would get some free work done. They will tell you exactly what recalls your vehicle has received (steering link on mine) and what it should receive.
So despite the woman on the phone having to be prodded to disclose the info I wanted, I am still mightily impressed with Toyos after sales service.

They fully rebuilt my top end.... there was a part list to long to type and they had it for a week. AND they supplied a courtesy car the whole time they had it (be it a Toyota Camry)
Then it got worse for Toyota……
The very next week I took the car to Armidale (sub topic:- http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... hp?t=86591 ) to visit my folks. During a rest stop on the way… my dog ran under the car and came out the other side covered in oil. It was pissing out everywhere. It was 4am so I toped up oil and proceeded on my way. Drove it to Armidale Toyota the next day to report it. They shipped it back to Hornsby Toyota where the particular mechanic (not Toyota) got a slap for failing to install a particularly vital engine seal…….
As I was still in Armidale…. and there for a weeks holiday, they gave me a Falcon wagon for my gear and dog for the week. Unfortunately, I do not think they would have got their deposit back, as I got it hung up a few times when I went fishing & camping down at Bingara Creek http://www.nnsw.com.au/bingara/district_map.html
Sorry Avis… I honestly thought I had enough clearance.
Anyway.....The falcon powered the dirt roads and the Express Way all the way home…… where I dropped off the rental… Picked up the Runner. It didn’t have a drop of oil on it anywhere and it has powered along like a trooper ever since.
All of this did not cost me a cent.

Try to keep at least one wheel on the ground at all times !!!!!! (unless you want to do a jump....... thats different)
