i will be in the market in a month for a 1984-85 4runner

i do not wish to purchase a dual cab because i will be running bigger than 33`s in the future and i do not want a single cab because i want to be able to cart around friends.

so i have knowledge of different sorts of lift:

body
susp
cutting guards

i do not wish to cut the guards
i only want to find out what actual lift out of body and susp i need to run 35s without to much scrubbing

I put 35 under a 88 ifs 4runner/lux with a 3" body lift.
Do a search there is heaps on the subject

my point is you hardly need to do anything to fit 35s on a lux if you did a search you would learn
From memory you you only need to move the front axle forward about 2" on a live front end to fit 35s or it will work if you just put a body lift on.
I just got back from a weekend away playing in a 4by park and the ifs unlocked did the majority of tracks that all the other rigs did but I do break front diffs.
My advise is do a search or when you buy one buy one that is already done
How is a dual cab going to limit your tyre size :?:

i always had the impression that a four runner is the same as a dual cab hilux as in spacing of the diffs are all the same.

what eve u have to do to a dual cab hilux to get 35's on i thought it was the same as a four runner

correct me if i'm wrong

I had an 85 (solid front) and now I've got an 89 (ifs)

I was always in the opinion that IFS is shit, but my current truck (89-ifs) is a lot more stable off road, and in certian situations performs better than the SFA. Even to the point of out-driving lifted 80's + GU's...

Yes, there is a lack of flex from the front end, but don't go writing it off so quickly, because one day you'll eat your own words, and I'd pay to see that ;)

Thats what suzi on 46s wrote.

I belive them to be the same the only difference is that the 4runner has a wider track I think its 68mm wider and the rear springs are softer[/quote]

Wider track is easily fixed with a IFS rear housing, and IFS hubs.... softer rear springs are only a matter of playing with spring rates....

I have an IFS LN61, whilsts its nicer on road, i find it really uncomfortable offroad due to limited front travel hitting even small pot holes etc...

You have wound up the torsion bars hav'nt you.
By doing this you have limited your down travel and hardend your your suspension and this is the worst possible thing you can do for off road

Without measurements of what stock would be, cant say as it may have been done previous to me owning car... im waiting for the WD40 to soak in so i an install a ball joint spacer kit.. will see how that goes... :D

I have it wound down more than up having down travell than up and a softer ride. Its easy to muck around with when you wind it up put the chassis on stands and then use a tape measure off the level concrete to make the sides even. When you wind it down dont worry about the stands

I whent for 35s for ground clearance rather than winding the suspention up and have now pushed the ifs to its unlocked limits

MY 86 LUX (IN THE TOP CORNER) IS ON 35'S IN THAT PIC AND I HAD NO PROBS WITH IT, I GOT 1.5INCH BODY 2INCH SPRINGS AND SHACKLES JUST GOTTA GET THE HAMMER INTO THE BOTTOM OF EACH INNER GAURD TO STOP THE SHARP BODY JOIN FROM TEARING THE TREAD WHILST MOVING AT A SLIGHT SPEED AND HITTING POTHOLE SIZED BUMPS

to fit any bigger than 33`s on a dual cab with out fiddling with the cab, you would have to lengthen the driveshaft, and move back the diff a fair amount, that dual cab has had its diff moved back a hell of a lot.

So if thats the case whats the difference with the 4 runner the sill still runs along the same line untill in the 4 runner it comes to a wheel arch insted of a tray.

We have a couple of IFS bandits in our club (VicKrawlers) and they run 35's , both cars are twin locked with big lift and they are right at the front when it comes to doing all the gnarly sheit :armsup: . One of the Surfs has moded his IFS front to accept 37's without the usual inner guard lovin' :cool: .
Another club member with a Dual cab runs only a 2" body lift & 2" leaf lift and has 35's under it with no problems at all.

Man I want that blue puppies exso cage - it looks tough as :twisted: .
Would it be legal on the road ?

I got a IFS 4runner and the most i can fit is 33's. when i turn the wheels they start to rub quite harshly. I have a 2" bodylift and 2" suspension lift.

I fit 35 under my ifs 4 runner with only a 3" body lift and a little bit of hammering and they hav'nt scrubed yet

well ill b going with, IFS rears all round (for the flex), 2 inch body lift, extended shackles. and maybe a lil trimming, ill b running 35s off road and 31-33 slicks on road

i am only 16 and i am a labourer so i am not bringing in loads of money so all the lockers, sliders, engine conversion and all the other jazz

Unless you get that engineered.. you might be spending all your hard earned cash on putting it back to stock and re-regoing it...

For starters - IFS springs up front - fair $$$ to make it work, extended shackles - illegal... if your on a budget stick with 33's as they easy to fit, less lash on driveline/fewer popped CV's and spend money on moving front axle forward, rears up front with IFS springs in the back, x-over steering and some sliders.

Most of the parts to do the above can be bought of this board cheaper than RRP, and there is plenty of tech/info on how to make it work.

that VERY hilux use to run 34" jt2's (which measure more than 34's) without diffs being moved... and either way its not hard to set up a good suspension setup with good flex and the diff position changed (rears up front, ifs rears). i believe 4 runners need abit more work in the rear to fit the bigger tyres than dual cabs do as a dual cab is a tray back.

I have fitted 35s to my 97 Extra cab (IFS) with no susp lift and only 40mm body lift. Had to do a bit of cut and shut on the firewall and cut the gaurds a little. It only just touches by a beesdick at full lock and full stuff but when it does its on a smooth bit anyway :)
I have fitted a front ARB to try and save the weak IFS crownwheel and a beefy idler arm to try and stop the weak IFS steering from bending.

If you go with a SA just move the front diff forward a tad and you can fit bigger boots easy!

The main difference between 4runner and dual cab is the wheelbase (4runner 4" shorter). I don't know if the rear wheelarches will hold much more than 35's especially if you want to keep it low. If you want to run bigger than that in future then buy a ute. You are on the right track looking for SA model, stick with the rears up front mod, there's not much improvement to be had with IFS rears up front for the extra work involved.

as i have stated before to fit 35s on a dual cab alot has to be done to the rear end. i will be sticking with the 4runner because you dont have to do a whole lot. yer well i will b probably putting it in the members section when all this happens so keep posted
