Pick it up tomorrow. The nice thing is it has been upgraded to ST seats. Will be chucking a dual battery setup and headlight upgrade on Friday and my 33 x 10x15s on as well. Keep it simple at the moment

As well as the Mav', I have a 2001 GU as a family bus. We bought it new in May 2001 (Feb 2001 build) and have never had a dram with it. It noe has 110k on it. No probs.
Yeah a TD42T would have been nice, but at the time they were alot more $$. We got the car for $44.9k on road. TD42T was about $53k on road, so at that stage, no go.
No probs with mine, despite the hundreds of doomsayers that I've read for the past few years. GM had more problems with the Gen III, and my wife owned one of them with similarly no probs!!

Just blow my dads 3 ltr up it is three months out of warranty and has 67,000 ks on it.He had the extended warrranty on it as it is a 3/2001 and was told that the motors had a problem. We used it as a second car this is why it has low ks.
It lost power and blow a heap of smoke I think it has dropped a piston. Will ring Nissan and see what they have to say I hope the news will be good.

i saw a comment floating about on the net about the early ones having a problem with oil spray bar that was installed incorrectly.
keep at nissian even if its out of warranty. a blown motor at 67,000 km's is ridiculous.
small thought.........do those early ones have the catalytic converter on them? if so i wonder if high sulphur diesel would start to clog the converter up and cause high exhaust temps and loss of power.

Does Val Davies work at Nissan Australia in Melbourne.bogged wrote:Val Davis is the woman to speak to.rustys wrote:Just blow my dads 3 ltr up it is three months out of warranty and has 67,000 ks on it.He had the extended warrranty on it as it is a 3/2001 and was told that the motors had a problem. We used it as a second car this is why it has low ks.

I have had little luck with Nissan today as all they say is it is out of warranty and that is that but the Service manager at Nepan Nissan in Sydney said for me to take the car to them and he will do a compression test on it and send the report to Nissan head office and see what they say .Will send it of and see .
Thanks for the help Garth
yup, search the forum for her info, also www.exploroz.com.aurustys wrote:Does Val Davies work at Nissan Australia in Melbourne.
Does anyone know what the pistons are made out of and if they are forged or not ?
Does sound more like a detonation problem rather than lack of oil feed / spray.
From reading the article in the last post it sounds like they need a bigger intercooler/ Water to air or something thats not being cooked by sitting on top of the motor. The GTIR's had them and were nick named interwarmers.
If i had one (3.0l) I'd get a front mount fitted and protect it as well as possible.
Having a bigger, more efficent intercooler will drop the boost pressure and temperature, maybe slightly more lag but better on boost perfermance.
Something to think about

Graham,
Dont listen to some of the crap people write. Ive heard Gu diffs are bulletproof but your brother will tell we have had a different experience.
Ive got a 3.0 with 70kms on it, I tow machines over a tonne everyday and have yet to encounter any probs.
Mate of mine has one with 120kms on it, no probs either but it spat its rear diff.
And both have dtronics on em and they're awesome!

Don,t wave the flag.jimsaq wrote:I don't disagree with you about the way some people just ramble on with hot air about the issue - but in all fairness, 70,000 or 120,000k's is a bit early in the game to be waving the flag of defiance in my opinion
I just pulled the motor down in my fathers GU 3.0 ltr and it has a hole in number 1 piston.
I blow it up about 4 weeks ago it has 62,000 ks on the clock and is serviced every 5,000ks the car is like new my parents just used it to tow a small van and as a second car it has never been of road.
It was 10 weeks out of the extended waranty and Nissan said they would not fix it.
We did all the jumping up and down sent the car to nissan for them to look at and in the end they said they would supply parts only now labour so I said that will do,give me the parts and I will fix it my self as I am a diesel mechanic.
We could not see the point of getting shafted by Nissan twice as they wanted a arm and two legs to repair it.
When I was at nissan I went into the work shop and spoke to the work shop forman to get the tension specs on the engine and saw a 3 ltr engine sitting on the floor I asked what happend to it and he said the usual a hole in the piston.
I think Nissan should of done a recall on these engines as the more pepole that we have spoken to the more comen it is.
Just my 2 cents
Garth
Note If you are thinking of pulling the sump of a 3ltr with the motor in the car you can,t as there are a couple of bolts behind the flywheel so you must remove the motor from the car first.
(this the worst design I have seen)
Or were nissan thinking that when the motor goes bang the fluid flywheel needs replacing as well as they are as good as there motors.
i know of 3 personally who have 2001 models all blew holes in pistons etc.grimbo wrote:but how amny are having problems is it an occasional one or 20% or…?
Are they high milegae units or all at 80 000km? And are they just the whatever year model?
Surely if it can make it too being "the truth" there must be some actual owners on here with the problem

I had a look at one yesterday, white ST (there's any other kind?). Auto, 115k, had the motor replaced at 60k. After a bit of research today, I've definitely been turned off buying one of these. Exploding pistons, crap MAF sensors, dual mass flywheels, leaking intercoolers and disintegrating turbos are a bit of a turn off. I can undertand the odd isolated incident - everything mechanical can fail - but to see constant problems from numerous sources, well, I think I'll spend my money elsewhere. Unfortunately the budget won't stretch to a 4.2.ats4x4dotcom wrote: as long as they arent a hand grenade with the pin pulled. @nd hand, are you buying one someone is offloading because it may, or has a problem occurring?

Hi all,
One of my mates has just headed off on a 3 month trip around OZ in his 2003 STR (ZD30). I called to see him just before he headed off last week, and noticed quite a lot of blow-by around his engine (after a dusty weekend camping).
His car has 95,000km on it, and gets used as a daily commuter. The blow-by i noticed started just after the crankcase ventilation pipe (on intake side, pre-turbo), and was visible at every pipe join all accross the intake. I pulled the crankcase ventilation hose off and it was a bit wet inside - i didn't remove intake pipe as i was too scared of what i'd find.
The car is under warranty, was bought from Nissan dealer, and is serviced by Nissan dealer. How scared should he be???

Thats piss funny! I did say to him that there shouldn't be that much oil there, but now i feel like a real arse, cause i'm going to have to tell him. The reason thats a bad thing is cause him & his better half have just quit their jobs, and have packed the Navara and bike trailer to go on a fairly long road trip - living the dream.
He'll be devastated. He he he. He might be back next week wanting to straight swap me for the old 4.2 GQ!!!
