Cheap 12V Air solenoid ?

Post by MightyMouse »

Anyone suggest a cheap 12VDC air solenoid suitable for activating a locking diff ? Needs to apply and release air pressure ie a 3/2 valve..

Needs to handle around 50PSI

No such thing I reckon.

Iv'e been down this road once before. Looked like I was going to have to morgage the house before I could afford any.
I haven't priced ARB ones but expect they would be pricey.
I went to SMC when I was looking and it seemed the majority of there valves are 24VDC. (Thats the standard control voltage in industrial applications). They do have 12V ones but they charge a premium for them cos there not very popular.
Can't remeber exact prices but was around the $100 mark for a 12V one with 1/4" inlet and outlet. The 1/8" stuff is a bit cheaper. Mind'u that wasn't for a 2/3 type, just the normal.
Also pay attention to the type of seal they use on the piston.
Some are rubber, some teflon I think?

FESTO might be worth a look also. Similar company to SMC.

Cheers.
If it doesn't have two sticks, I don't wana know about it!

An update - going through my pile of cast off Daihatsu bits - found a 3/2 12V solenoid that was part of the emission system. Its plastic bodied, with small ports but it seems to switch at 75PSI no problems.

Havn't actually used it on the locker yet ( still waiting for the #$%^ thing ) but hey its cheap.

Also tried some of the 24VDC solenoids made by SMC and they seem to operate OK on 12V. By preference will use the Daihatsu plastic one as its small and the correct voltage.

The one you found will most likely be the idle control solenoid for either the A/C or for the headlights/HVAC fan. Be interesting to see how long that lasts @ 75PSI!

Did you find anything made by Goyen? I've got one sitting in my garage from a turbo electronic boost controller kit. I was using it on a water injection kit too.

IF it fails them will use the SMC 24VDC unit. If its unreliable then will get a 12VDC coil.

OK - the emission control valve failed ( worked for awhile but developed a leak that got worse and worse. ) 24VDC SMC valve NOT relaible at 12V.

AJFeroza - the lockers for a F300 Feroza.

Now I have your interest its got a Toyota rear axle going in - using a TJM Prolock ( if they ever release the #$%^ things ) - or if I get sick of waiting an ARB unit. Using a 5.285 crownwheel and pinion so ratio's are the same as the front diff -but will eventually swap that out as well ( oneday )

All fits under widetrack flares

Its one way of getting a locker - and a very strong rear - but not that simple.....
